Akai Professional APC40 Ableton Live Controller

Ableton Live is something of a dichotomy. For live performance and remixing it provides the best possible software interface?which is seriously constrained by the worst possible hardware interface?a screen and a mouse. And if that?s not bad enough, running Live on a laptop, on stage, makes it look more like you?re surfing the web than performing. The answer is a control surface that frees you from the prison of the computer and lets you play ?Live?. Although there are plenty of these around, until recently, none were optimal or optimised for working with Live. However, Akai Professional?s dedicated Live controller, the APC40, changes this.

First Impressions

My initial impression, when unboxing the APC40, was one of (pleasant) surprise. Both the pictures I had seen of it and my experience of other control surfaces to date, had me expecting a smaller, flimsier, plasticy unit. What I got was a nicely proportioned (about the width and twice the depth of a computer keyboard), solidly constructed (metal with rubberised ends) piece of hardware that looks like it can stand up to some serious abuse?which is exactly what it is likely to get on the road and it is clear that in designing it, Akai have paid as much attention to where it is going to be used as to how. Although this metal construction makes the APC40 heavier than it looks, it?s a small price to pay for such ruggedness.

Setup

There ain?t none! Really. The APC40 has been designed, in partnership with Ableton, to work with Live 8 (and 7) straight out of the box. As a result there are no drivers to install, you simply plug it into your computer (via USB, there?s no MIDI sockets), select it as the control surface in Live?s preferences and?that?s it!

Control

Being a Live controller, a substantial part of the APC40 is, unsurprisingly, taken up with a (85) grid of clip launch buttons. Live makes it easy to see which of these buttons launches which clip by automatically placing a red rectangle around a corresponding 85 grid of clips on screen. Pressing one of the APC40?s four ?bank select? buttons moves this rectangle one clip in any direction and holding down the adjacent shift button whilst doing so moves it by a bank of five vertical and eight horizontal clips at a time. In practice, I found this to be the wrong way round and wish there was a simple way to switch this behaviour so that, by default, the bank select button actually moves everything by?a bank!

The clip launch buttons have four states ? unlit (no clip), orange (unlaunched clip), green (launched i.e. currently playing clip) and red (recording). Pressing an unlit clip button will (provided the track is armed) turn it red and start it recording. Pressing an orange button either makes it blink orange as it prepares to turn green and play, or turn green and play straight away (depending upon how the current song is configured). Each button is about the size of an average fingertip, with enough space either size for the larger than average fingertips.

Below the clip launch grid is a row of stop clip buttons, to its right, a column of scene launch buttons and where they intersect, a stop all clips button. Below the clip stop row is a row of track selection buttons (1-8 and master) that give focus to a track, a row of 8 track activator buttons, a row of 8 solo/cue buttons (which turn blue when pressed, making it easy to see what is soloed) and a row of 8 record arm buttons. To the right of these is a cue level knob and beneath all of this are 9 faders (8 tracks and a master). The tensioning of the these faders is spot on and they work in almost perfect harmony with Live?s on screen faders. I say almost perfect because, for some strange reason, Live does not utilise their full throw, leaving a small amount of play at either end.

This arrangement takes up the full depth and about two thirds of the width of the APC40. The remaining third is taken up by two banks of eight continuous rotary knobs, the former for ?track control?, the latter for ?device control?, a crossfader and some buttons. Beneath the track control knobs are four buttons labelled pan and send (a,b, & c respectively). Press one of these buttons and all 8 track control knobs perform that function, each knob being automatically mapped to one consecutive track, with pseudo total recall courtesy of the greed LEDs encircling them. I would prefer these knobs and buttons to be located in the APC40?s channel strips, as this would be in keeping with Live?s layout and is more logical to those of us used to mixing desks.

Beneath this section are the aforementioned bank select button and for DJs, a tap tempo button (which works very well) and plus and minus tempo nudge buttons (which offer the potential for integration into a deck based DJing setup, though they did give me mixed results).

Next down are the device control knobs which control the parameters of Live?s devices i.e. the Live instruments/effects inserted in a track (and which, like the track control knobs, are laid out in two rows of four). Having used the track selection buttons to give a track focus, you turn on/off and move between instruments/effects within a track using the left/right arrow buttons and device on/off button located beneath them. The device control knobs come pre mapped to the parameters of Live?s devices, which works fantastically well with devices offering less than 8 parameters?however, many offer more than 8 parameters and in these cases, the choice of parameters to which they are mapped can be a little random? added to which, neither Live nor the APC40 indicate which parameters are mapped to which knobs, turning this whole affair into a bit of a craps shoot? This is something that is in urgent need of remedy by way of a software update for Live that enables it to highlight mapped parameters indicating to which knobs they mapped.

Device control extends to third party plug-ins too. Although the APC40 doesn?t automatically map to them, it?s simple to do this yourself by clicking the configure button followed by the parameter you want to change and then twiddling the knob you want to use to use to change it with. Annoyingly though, manual mapping only appears to work on a local basis, so every time you use a fresh instance of a plug-in, you have to configure this instance from scratch. Perhaps Akai should license Novation?s Automap technology?and perhaps Ableton should include configure buttons in Live?s built in effects and instruments so that if you don?t like the way that the APC40 has them configured, it?s easy to change this.

Beneath all of this are clip/track and detail view buttons that toggle the display accordingly, record quantization, MIDI overdub, metronome, play stop and record buttons, which do what they say on the labels and a replaceable crossfader.

Round the Back

In addition to a power socket (for a wall wart unfortunately), power button and USB socket, there are two sockets to which foot switches can be connected, opening up even greater control possibilities.

In Use.

Because the APC40 communicates bi-directionally with Live, all of the pads, knobs and sliders work exactly as you would expect them to, with absolutely no perceptible latency whatsoever. What?s more, they feel good to use and the visual feedback on offer makes it easy to see what?s going on (with the exception of Live?s devices) making the APC40 extremely intuitive to use. Anyone familiar with Live will feel instantly at home with the APC40.

Other Uses

Because the APC40 generates MIDI data over USB, it can double up as a control surface for any MIDI mappable software. I tried mapping it to Resolume Avenue, which turned out to be as easy as it was rewarding. The only fly in the ointment is that when controlling other software, the coloured lights in the APC40?s clip launch buttons do not work?at least not without some serious hackery, as Akai do not support third party usage or even provide the necessary information, which seems like a mistake. Nevertheless, even without the coloured lights, Live, Resolume Avenue & the Akai Professional APC40 are an extremely potent and heady combination!

What?s Missing?

Despite there being clip/track and detail view buttons, somewhat surprisingly there?s no dedicated button for switching between session and clip views. Although there?s a crossfader the A/B crossfader assignment buttons found in Live are not replicated on the APC40. However, the most glaring omissions must be that the APC40 offers no control of Live?s browser and no control over looping and other aspects of audio clips. Sadly, this means you are still reliant upon a mouse to access some of Live?s functionality.

The solution I?d like to see, in a future version, is the inclusion of a trackpad, which would address several of these omissions, completely remove the need for a mouse and provide direct control of the XY pads in Live?s (and third party) instruments & effects, which would, in turn, free up some of the knobs that are currently and somewhat unsatisfactorily assigned to replicating XY pad functionality. Placing the pan/send knobs and buttons in the ?channel strips?, as previously discussed, would provide more than enough space for such a trackpad (be it laptop or chaos pad sized).

The Verdict

The Akai APC40 exceeded my expectations in every respect. As good as it looks in photos and videos, it?s not until you get up close and personal with it that you realise just how good it really is. Sure it?s not 100 per cent perfect, nothing is..except for me of course, but getting hung up upon what?s missing would be missing the point. The simple fact is that the APC40 liberates Live from your laptop, finally enabling it to fulfil its true potential as a live performance instrument and remix tool, thereby taking it to a whole new level. So until such time as Akai bring out an APC80, with a Novation Launchpad sized 88 grid, pans in the channel strips, a trackpad, more knobs (preferably with LED/LCD displays), some extra buttons and an APC60 expander to accompany it, the APC40 is simply the best Live controller there is and as such, an absolute must have for anyone using Live, be it in the studio or live!

Cable Fracas Could Bar Fans From Seeing Bowl Games

Time Warner Cable, stuck in a dispute over fees with Sinclair Broadcast Group, says it will continue to provide network programming to viewers even if Sinclair pulls its stations off the cable system.

Time Warner's end run around Sinclair late Thursday is the latest twist in a long-running struggle between TV broadcasters and the cable and satellite operators that carry their signals into customers' homes.

As of midday Friday, Sinclair still didn't have a deal to carry its channels on Time Warner Cable Inc. and Bright House Networks. Previous contracts were set to expire at midnight.

The dispute had threatened to prevent cable customers in Sinclair markets around the country from seeing Saturday's Outback Bowl between Penn State and Florida. Time Warner has about 4 million customers who get local broadcast stations owned by Sinclair.

Time Warner spokeswoman Maureen Huff said the companies were still negotiating Friday afternoon, but that the cable company would import broadcast signals from other cities to replace Sinclair stations so local customers wouldn't miss their network programming from NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox.

Time Warner has been doing that in upstate New York because of a similar dispute with Smith Media. Viewers get the network evening shows but see out-of-market local newscasts and syndicated fare.

Huff said even if the dispute with Sinclair drags on, Time Warner customers in Sinclair cities would still see all NFL playoff games, the Super Bowl and "most if not all" would see the full assortment of college football bowls.

Sinclair did not immediately return messages Friday seeking comment.

Without an agreement, Hunt Valley, Md.-based Sinclair planned to pull its signals from Time Warner and Bright House cable systems. Sinclair owns 33 stations carried by Time Warner around the country, and others in the South ? though not many network affiliates ? carried on Bright House.

Bright House spokeswoman Kimberly Maki held out hope the company could get an extension from Sinclair while negotiations continue. "It happens all the time," she said.

Joe Smith, who operates Sinclair's ABC station in Pensacola, Fla., was worried that University of Florida fans in his area wouldn't be able to see their team play in the Outback Bowl, to be broadcast on ABC and carried on Bright House cable.

"It is quite possible we will be off out there on game day," he said.

Montey Chapel and his sons in Cantonment, Fla., planned to camp out in front of their new flat-screen television and enjoy a daylong feast of football on New Year's Day.

"Six hours, 12 hours ? as long as they last, we will be watching," Chapel said. But they might miss the one game they were most anticipating ? between Florida and Penn State ? if Sinclair and Time Warner couldn't settle their dispute.

For cable customers like Chapel, the only way to see every game might be to go old-school and pull in the signals of local TV stations using an antenna. They'll also need a digital TV or converter box. But these days, most Americans get broadcast channels through subscription services such as cable or satellite TV.

Disputes between broadcasters and the cable and satellite operators are cropping up more often.

Broadcast companies used to let cable providers carry their channels for free while making their money selling advertising time. But the recession caused some advertisers to cut spending, and the broadcasters are trying to charge cable operators higher fees to carry their programming.

In some cases, cable companies have resisted the broadcasters' demands, leaving TV viewers caught in the crossfire. Earlier this year, Cablevision Systems Corp. customers went without Fox programming for 15 days and missed two World Series games.

One of the longest blackouts occurred in 2005, when about 75,000 cable customers in Texas, Missouri and Louisiana went without local NBC and ABC affiliate programming for nearly the entire year because of an impasse between the stations' owner, Nexstar Broadcasting Group Inc., and cable systems.

Broadcasters were long believed to hold the upper hand in negotiating fees with cable and satellite providers because blacked-out customers usually called the cable company to complain. The cable and satellite operators have appealed for help from federal regulators.

In October, Cablevision Systems Corp. asked the Federal Communications Commission to force Fox stations to keep providing programming while Cablevision sought arbitration to settle a dispute over fees. The FCC declined to get involved, and Cablevision wound up swallowing Fox's terms.

Heading into the New Year's holiday, some Florida football fans were making backup plans in case they couldn't watch their favorite team at home.

Back in Cantonment, Jennifer Stokes adorned her SUV with a Florida Gators front license plate. The Bright House subscriber said she and her family and friends refuse to miss the Outback Bowl.

"We will just go somewhere else and watch it," she said. "It's a big deal."

Time Warner shares rose 4 cents to $66.15 in late afternoon trading, while Sinclair shares added 20 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $8.33.

Catch of the Day: The Orvis Fly Fishing Android App

Many people enjoy fly fishing for trout or salmon as a way to escape the daily grind and enjoy nature. Fly fishing, one of the more sophisticated fishing methods, can be a bit intimidating for beginners to grasp. The Orvis Fly Fishing app is a multimedia guide to technique, lures, knots, the best places to fish, and other relevant topics. It contains a multitude of detailed color photos, video tutorials, and podcasts, and it even has an in-app store so you can purchase the right gear.

The home screen offers several sections: Casting, Top 10 Casting Mistakes, Flies, Knots, Fishing Reports, and Podcasts. The Casting section contains video clips where fly fishing experts demonstrate proper technique. As you watch the videos, you'll begin to see that proper casting technique is as important as proper swing technique is in golf.

The Flies section lets you browse through hundreds of flies (artificial lures made to look like the insects that fish feed upon) by name (A to Z), type (nymphs, dry flies, or streamers), or specific fly. Each fly entry has a detailed color photo, a description of its material components, and where and how to use it. If you decide that you need the fly, the screen also provides a handy button to buy it on the Orvis Website.

My favorite part of the app is the Knots section, which is divided into Knots by Name (A to Z) and Knots by Purpose. When you select a knot, you can watch an animated, step-by-step demo of the procedure for tying it. You can also view a video clip, but I find that the animations are easier to see and follow. If you don't know much about tying knots and want to learn, the app is worth buying simply on the strength of this feature.

The Fishing Reports section breaks information down alphabetically by state (as well as the countries Belize, Brazil, and Mexico), subdividing each state by major fisheries. Reports contain detailed information about fishing activity, species that are biting, the best time to fish, and the best tackle to use. You'll also see links to local fishing guides, if you want someone to take you to the best spots. Unfortunately, search by GPS location is not available.

In the Podcasts section you get a selection of audio programs, many from Trout Unlimited, discussing various fishing topics. The app will download the entire podcast before it begins to play, so Wi-Fi is recommended if you have it. I would prefer streaming audio, so that I could stop downloading the podcast if I decide I'm not interested. Podcasts save on your SD Card, so you can replay them later if you wish.

The app also has a glossary of terms and a portal to the Orvis store, where you can purchase fishing tackle and other gear.

This app is missing a few things that I would like to see. For starters, a guide to salmon and trout species and habits would be useful. A guide to local fishing regulations would be very convenient for anglers who travel out of state. GPS location would be a nice way to tie the information together. And a sharing option would be handy for letting your fishing buddies know about a particular fishing report or perhaps a fly that caught a lot of fish for you.

Still, this app is very useful as is, and I highly recommend it to fly fishing enthusiasts.

Facebook was Most Visited, Searched for Website in 2010

Facebook was the most visited website in the United States in 2010, and the world's largest social network was also the year's most popular search term, according to Experian Hitwise. Facebook accounted for 8.93 percent of all US visits between January and November, the metrics firm said in its year-end round up. Google came in second with 7.19 percent of visits with Yahoo Mail, Yahoo and YouTube rounding out the top five.

Finding Facebook

The term "Facebook" accounted for 2.11 percent of searches overall in 2010. A total of four variations of Facebook such as "Facebook.com," "www.Facebook.com" and "Facebook login" were in Experian Hitwise's top 10 search terms in 2010 accounting for 3.48 percent of all US searches. Other popular search terms in 2010 were YouTube, Craigslist, MySpace and eBay.

Website vs. Web Property

Facebook may be the number one website, but it still hasn't beaten out Google as the top Web property. Google and its related sites such as Gmail, YouTube and Blogger accounted for 9.85 percent of all US visits. Facebook and its related properties were slightly behind the Googleverse at 9.83 percent of all visits.

Harmon Killebrew Says He Has Esophageal Cancer

1_Twins_Killebrew_Cancer.sff.jpg
Associated Press

FILE - This April 2, 2010 file photo shows former Minnesota Twins player and Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew in Minneapolis. Killebrew has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Killebrew released a statement through the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010 saying he expects to make a full recovery from the "very serious" condition.

Hall of Fame slugger Harmon Killebrew has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

The 74-year-old Killebrew released a statement through the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, saying he expects to make a full recovery from the "very serious" condition.

"With my wife, Nita, by my side, I have begun preparing for what is perhaps the most difficult battle of my life," Killebrew said.

Killebrew hit 573 home runs and made 11 All-Star appearances during his 22-year career spent mostly with the Washington Senators and Twins. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1984 and was fifth on the career home run list when he retired in 1975 after one season with the Kansas City Royals.

Killebrew currently ranks 11th on the all-time homer list, and his eight seasons with 40 or more homers still is tied for second in league history to Babe Ruth.

Killebrew has maintained a regular presence with the Twins for years. He lives in the Phoenix area and said he is receiving treatment at a branch of the Mayo Clinic nearby. He was optimistic about his chances for recovery.

"The Mayo Clinic is one of the largest and most experienced medical centers treating esophageal cancer in the world. In the past decade, they have made tremendous advances in the treatment of this disease," Killebrew said. "Nita and I feel blessed to have access to the best doctors and medical care."

The congenial power hitter is one of the most beloved players in Twins history, as much for his gentle and approachable nature off the field as for the towering home runs he smacked at Metropolitan Stadium during his playing days.

"I tell everybody he's too nice to be a baseball player," former teammate Tony Oliva said Thursday. "He's a gentleman."

Twins designated hitter Jim Thome passed Killebrew on the career home run list in August, belting two at brand new Target Field. After the feat, Killebrew issued a gracious congratulatory message to Thome.

"I speak very highly of Jim Thome," Killebrew said in September. "Not only is he a great player, but he's a great individual. I think he was a little apprehensive about passing me up. I said, 'Jim, I passed a lot of guys up myself along the way. I hope you hit 100 more.'"

Killebrew's No. 3 jersey is retired, and he made several appearances at the Twins' new outdoor ballpark last season, including during their playoff series against the Yankees.

He is one of the biggest draws at the team's annual TwinsFest, a fan event in January that serves as a buildup to spring training.

"I thank everyone for their outpouring of prayers, compassion and concern," he said. "Nita and I ask for privacy during this difficult journey."

Oliva said he was "shocked" when he found out about the diagnosis.

"You heard the word 'cancer' and it's a very tough word, but right now everything's so advanced that he's probably going to be all right," Oliva said in a phone interview. "The doctors do a great, great job."

Oliva saw Killebrew in September for the team's 50th season celebration that honored the franchise's best.

"He was looking fine, in beautiful shape," Oliva said. "He looked like he was in better shape than when he played."

Added Oliva: "Everybody's pulling for him. Our prayers are going to be with him and his family."

In the Jungle the Mighty Jungle the Lion Sleeps Tonight

" To whom much is given much is expected."

Ted Kennedy, the man upon whose shoulders was foisted the Kennedy family for better or worse. In spite of all his flaws he was rock solid. The fact that he faced his demons head on was remarkable.

He could have easily folded up his tent and gone away yet he withstood the barrage of blows after experiencing the deaths of his three older brothers.

While a young boy he lost his brother Joe to WW I I, then as we all know that ideological assassins killed his brother John and then Robert. He also lost his sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver just a few weeks ago.

When he drove his car off of Dike's Bridge and the resulting accident took the life of Mary Jo Kopechne, one would think that such a regrettable action would have certainly doomed this man, leaving him to broken to carry the unimaginable tragic burdens still to come at him and his family.

In spite of his personal frailties and surviving a plane crash, he still managed 47 years of untiring and unwavering service to his country. He worked very hard for the less fortunate and he was well respected by his opposition.

George H.W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States, released a statement early Wednesday morning on the death of Senator Edward Kennedy.

"While we didn?t see eye-to-eye on many political issues through the years, I always respected his steadfast public service - so much so, in fact, that I invited him to my library in 2003 to receive the Bush Award for Excellence in Public Service," President Bush said. "Ted Kennedy was a seminal figure in the United States Senate - a leader who answered the call to duty for some 47 years, and whose death closes a remarkable chapter in that body?s history."

Kennedy was the first American to receive the Bush Award. In November 2003, the Massachusetts Democrat received the honor from the former president at the Texas A&M-based library.

"We are not here to celebrate a partisan ideology," Mr. Bush said that evening, "but rather, the steadfast public service of a seminal figure in the U.S. Senate, and by extension, his remarkable family."

The widow of another president, Ronald Reagan, was one of the first to speak out from the Republican Party.

?Given our political differences, people are sometimes surprised by how close Ronnie and I have been to the Kennedy family,? Nancy Reagan said in a statement from Los Angeles.

?But Ronnie and Ted could always find common ground, and they had great respect for one another. In recent years, Ted and I found our common ground in stem cell research, and I considered him an ally and a dear friend. I will miss him.?

I too will miss Ted Kennedy, if you look at any piece of legislation over the past 50 years and if it had anything to do with the advancement of civil rights, education, equal pay, health or economic issues for the everyday man and woman it will also have his name attached to it.

Thanks for all that you have contributed to this country not only in mind but in blood too. "RIP" Ted.

How to check up on your cloud provider

Cloud providers won't let you audit their actual systems, but there are questions you can ask to decide your level of trust

Potential cloud-services customers face a tough problem: How can they trust cloud providers enough to hire them when the providers refuse to reveal important infrastructure details for reasons of security and practicality?

These providers say they can?t open their network architectures to customer scrutiny for fear the details will give potential attackers a blueprint for compromising security. They also say the time involved in answering each customer?s questions would be prohibitive.

(Cloud Computing Research Center)

The bottom line, as one service provider put it earlier this year, is that customers will never get the level of transparency they want. "We won't let you audit to the degree that you would audit your own infrastructure," says Adam Swidler, a product marketing manager at Google, speaking about Google?s cloud services. "It's never going to be the same as auditing your own infrastructure. You'll have to extend some level of trust to third-party verification."

While customers may not be able to walk through cloud providers? data centers and grill their CISOs, they can submit probing questions whose answers may serve the purpose, says the Cloud Security Alliance, which has written a questionnaire businesses can adapt for their own purposes when trying to assess the suitability of cloud service providers.

Called the Consensus Assessments Initiative Questionnaire, the document is a well-thought-out framework for assessing cloud security. ?This question set is a simplified distillation of the issues, best practices, and control ... intended to help organizations build the necessary assessment processes for engaging with cloud providers,? the CSA says.

Sci-Fi To Fact: Planet Hunters Find Worlds Like Earth

The inner four planets of the Gliese 581 system orbit the host star, a red dwarf 20 light-years from Earth, in this rendering from a National Science Foundation artist. The planet in the foreground has a 37-day orbit and, like Earth, is far enough from the star for liquid water to exist.

In the search for extraterrestrial real estate, it was a record-breaking year: Scientists found more than 100 new planets ? more than ever before. And a few of the planets look enticingly like our own warm and comfortable Earth.

As recently as 20 years ago, no one knew if planets outside our solar system even existed. Today, the list of such "exoplanets" has surpassed 500. During the past year, researchers announced that they had detected whole planetary systems with three, five, and possibly even seven planets apiece.

This year also brought the first discoveries from NASA's official planet-hunting instrument, a small space telescope named Kepler. The Kepler team has announced just a handful of new planets so far, but there are hints of hundreds more to come.

Out Of The Movies

But don't try to tell astrophysicist Marc Kuchner, a staff scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, that discovering planets has become routine.

The first five exoplanets detected by Kepler compared with Earth and Jupiter, which is our solar system's largest planet. The number below each planet indicates how many times larger its radius is relative to that of Earth.

"You can say that giving birth to babies is routine, right? It happens all the time," Kuchner says. "But if you're the person who found the planet, it's not routine for you. My heart skips a beat every time I hear about one of these things."

That's probably because finding a new planet still feels like science fiction becoming fact. Those distant balls of gas, or water, or rock represent the possibility of other worlds, or even other civilizations.

"Finding a planet like ours is exactly what got me into this game. I want to find out ... I don't just want to find a planet like ours. I want to know the answer to the question, 'Are we alone?' " Kuchner says.

Subtle Cues

This year, for the first time, scientists say they found a planet just distant enough from its star that liquid water could exist there. But finding out if there is life on that planet will be a much more difficult task. Like most planets, it's still invisible. We only know that such planets exist because they change the light from their stars in subtle ways.

For instance, if the light from any star dims slightly in a regular pattern ? every few days or years ? it's a signal that a planet may be orbiting that star, blocking a bit of the light every time it passes. Astronomers can then calculate how big the planets are and how far they are from their star.

Also, when the planet comes between its star and us, a tiny fraction of the star's light passes through the planet's atmosphere. It's like a sunrise or sunset around the edge of the planet. "And that light, we can analyze and we can use it to tell us about the chemistry of the atmosphere," Kuchner says.

Such analysis "is a whole new era in planet science," says Alycia Weinberger, a staff scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington. "There's been just a tremendous number of papers that have come out in the last year and even before that, trying to characterize what planets are really made of."

'Crazy Things Out There'

It is also now possible to see a few distant planets directly. Astronomers can create a kind of artificial eclipse of a star inside a telescope. When the star's light is blocked, it sometimes reveals planets: faint dots moving around the star.

All of these techniques have unveiled a shocking degree of planetary diversity.

"There are planets that are similar to things that we have in the solar system, and there are planets that are so different that we didn't dream of them," Kuchner says. "I mean, we literally didn't think of them ? that there could be such crazy things out there!"

A planet turned up recently with an atmosphere rich in carbon. On a planet like that one, diamond might be as common as rocks are on Earth.

The Puzzle Scientists Love

Astronomers used to think that planetary systems had a natural order, with small planets like Earth close to the star and stately gas giants like Jupiter far away. But then they found lots of huge planets right next to their stars, zipping around in superfast orbits.

"That is still a real puzzle," Weinberger says.

But it's the kind of puzzle that scientists love.

"Fields in which there is nothing left to figure out are really no fun at all," she says. "And I think the exoplanet field has been attracting lots of bright young people because there are all these interesting problems to solve."

They're looking forward to using a powerful new tool. NASA is building a big new space telescope called the James Webb Space Telescope. It will be 100 times more powerful than the agency's well-known Hubble Space Telescope. Astronomers get a dreamy look in their eyes just talking about it.

So for them, it was probably the worst news of 2010 when NASA announced, in mid-November, that this dreamboat telescope was going to cost $1.5 billion more than budgeted. The agency hasn't said how it will cover the cost overrun, or whether it still intends to launch the telescope within five years, as previously planned.

iPad 2 to be thinner, have better sound

The second-generation iPad will be 3mm thinner than its predecessor and have a 'wide-range speaker' covered with metal mesh, according to a Japanese website.

The Mac Octakara website claimed to have heard from an unnamed Chinese source that the new iPad will use the same 9.7-inch LCD screen as the original iPad and is likely to start shipping in January.

The Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) has also moved, now residing close to the top of the rear panel, the source said.

However, the source couldn't shed any light on whether there would be two cameras - one facing forwards and one facing backwards - in the second-generation iPad.

Earlier this week, a picture of Taiwanese celebrity Jimmy Lin holding what he claims to be an iPad mini was spotted on the star's blog.

Skype Video Calling Over 3G Coming Soon to iPhone?

Over the holiday, Skype posted (and quickly pulled) a FAQ regarding video calling on iPhone. Video calling on mobile Skype has been rumored since Apple revealed the iPhone 4, and it would appear the feature is coming quite soon. RedmondPie captured the page before it was taken down- here are a few interesting tidbits from the FAQ:

"You can make Skype video calls by using a WiFi or 3G connection."

"In both portrait and landscape mode double tapping anywhere on your screen will zoom the picture to take up the full extent of the screen. Double tapping again will take the picture back to its normal size."

"Yes, you will be able to receive screen shares from people using Skype for Windows or Mac OS X. You cannot share what is on the screen of your iPhone."

"Skype for iPhone does not support group video calling."

"The contacts you are calling must be using one of the following Skype clients:

  • Skype for Windows version 4.2 and above
  • Skype for Mac OS X version 2.8 and above
  • Skype for iPhone 3.0 and above"

?Make sure your device is running iOS 4.0 or above.?

So in other words, cross-platform full-screen video calling and screen share receiving over 3G. Not bad!

Estonia's euro joy dampened by EU debt crisis (AP)

TALLINN, Estonia ? Despite a hellish year for the euro, the tiny Baltic nation of Estonia will be joining the single currency club as the champagne corks pop at midnight on New Year's Eve.

Estonia will become the eurozone's 17th member and instantly claim the mantle of the poorest as well as one of the smallest ? representing just over one-tenth of a percent of the bloc's $12.5 trillion economy.

But Estonia's membership carries symbolic value, it is hoped, demonstrating that Europe's grandest financial project remains an appetizing prospect despite the worst crisis in its 12-year history.

Estonia is even vowing to lend a hand, no matter how small, to other members in need. Finance Minister Jurgen Ligi said recently that the Baltic state would soon start negotiations with the European Union on granting a loan guarantee of up to euro130 million ($174 million) to bailed-out Ireland ? a major commitment for a nation with a state budget of only euro6 billion ($8 billion).

In November, Ireland became the second eurozone country, after Greece, to require emergency support from its partners in the European Union and the International Monetary Fund to avoid effective bankruptcy.

The worry, particularly in the bond markets, is that other countries will get sucked into the mire ? Portugal and Spain are widely considered to be the most endangered eurozone countries with both grappling with their hefty debt burdens.

To many outsiders, adopting the euro during the current turmoil may be akin to the age-old story about the conformist who decides to jump off the bridge because everyone else is doing so.

But a large part of Estonian society regards the common currency as the culmination of 20 years of western integration that began after the country achieved independence in 1991 and despite the traumas experienced in 2010, there are many who still trumpet the economic benefits that come from joining the euro club.

"Without any doubt, joining the eurozone is the most remarkable achievement of this government," Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip told lawmakers earlier this month. "Membership will bring along more jobs, higher pensions and faster economic growth. It will bring us stability."

For many Estonians, the pursuit of closer European integration acquired a greater urgency three years ago after key websites in the country came under a cyber-attack orchestrated in Russia ? an event that followed the removal of a Soviet war memorial from downtown Tallinn, Estonia's capital.

As a result, Estonians re-experienced the very vulnerabilities that led them to closer cooperation with the West in the first place.

Still, the euro isn't loved by everyone: polls show support for adopting the euro has dropped to just above 50 percent from nearly 60 percent at its highest. Many believe prices will go up, like they did in other members that joined the bloc.

"I don't like it," said sales clerk Evely Jaanson, 22. "I think many Estonians are not ready for it. We should have waited for a couple of years."

On the other hand, it could be seen as remarkable that euroskepticism isn't more widespread after a year of bad news, with Greece requiring a euro110 billion ($144 billion) rescue package and Ireland ? once roundly hailed in the Baltics as the ideal economy to emulate ? another euro67.5 billion ($88 billion).

"I feel genuinely sorry for the Irish taxpayers," Ansip told The Associated Press in late November. "They've been paying taxes in the belief of getting social benefits from the state only to find out that a large part of their taxes has gone to cover losses of commercial banks."

By European standards, Estonia is a poor place. The average monthly salary was euro760 ($995) in the third quarter of this year, while unemployment is 15.5 percent, compared with an average of 10.1 percent in the euro area. And last year the economy saw its worst fall ever, with output plummeting nearly 14 percent ? one of the steepest falls in the 27-member EU.

A handful of economists argue that given such disparity with developed euro area members, Estonia should refrain from joining and instead concentrate on catching up by running deficits ? something that the euro rules theoretically prohibit.

Estonia's economy ? known for its embrace of innovation and new technologies ? is emerging from the crisis. Third-quarter growth was 5 percent year-on-year, largely thanks to a surge in exports, while the International Monetary Fund forecast next year's growth to be 4 percent.

"Estonia has recovered and adjusted itself in a tremendous way after the crash," said Bank of Finland Governor Erkki Liikanen in an interview with Finnish national broadcaster YLE.

To its credit, Estonia, which joined the EU, along with NATO, in 2004, has been a model of fiscal discipline, consistently maintaining budgets with surpluses recorded for seven years straight from 2002. Estonia will also boast the lowest public debt per GDP of all euro area members.

According to Kai Stukenbrock, an analyst at Standard & Poor's, Estonia will be able to show the EU "the very positive example of an economy that through political cohesion, prudent policies, decisive reforms and great flexibility managed to make its way into the eurozone."

On the downside, inflation is likely to increase next year, while the IMF says that no major inroads against joblessness will be made due to "mismatched skills and low labor mobility" among job seekers.

Despite that, Estonians and foreign businessmen take some consolation from the fact that it is generally perceived as the most successful of the Baltic trio.

"Latvia has gone bust, the situation in Lithuania is not much better but Estonia still shines," said Michael Stenner, the German manager of the Hotel Telegraaf in the medieval Old Town of Tallinn.

Latvia and Lithuania have said they seek to adopt the euro in 2014 ? another sign that the euro dream remains alive.

Respighi and remembrance

Turnover being what it is, it's funny to think that not many current members of the Philadelphia Orchestra were around for Riccardo Muti's Respighi tone poems. These colorful pieces are far in the rearview mirror - two and three decades past - but even now they resonate as events. (Of course, Muti was an event.)

While Gianandrea Noseda's view of Respighi doesn't have much in common with that of his elder countryman, he was no less a convincing evangelist Friday afternoon. Where Muti turned the Philadelphia Orchestra into something incisive and terse, Noseda emphasized humanity. Muti was haughty, but the current Milan-born visitor to the orchestra's podium is genial.

Noseda, chief conductor of the BBC Philharmonic, also exhibited great precision and control in The Fountains of Rome and Roman Festivals. The latter, longer piece was the more developed interpretation, in part because the work demands it, but also for being studded with exceptionally silken solos from concertmaster David Kim, principal cellist Hai-Ye Ni, and principal hornist Jennifer Montone.

Todd Levy, principal clarinetist of the Milwaukee Symphony, was visiting (Ricardo Morales and Samuel Caviezel are on parental leave), and while he's plenty nimble and mellow, his overall presence was turned a couple of notches too low. Not so with the percussionists. Great moment of joyful pandemonium: nine of them simultaneously working their battery of instruments. Another novelty was the always-surprising entrance of the mandolin, played deftly by Patrick Mercuri.

Noseda brought to the orchestra its first encounter with Hakon Jarl, Smetana's tone poem depicting warring Christians and pagans. In some ways it's classic Smetana - angry swells of strings, trumpet calls, triangle - but it's extremely appealing for having more subtle material. Listen for the visitation from Liszt in a section of harmonic wandering.

Garrick Ohlsson, the veteran pianist who first performed with this orchestra in 1970, was the rather stunning soloist in Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 5. To look at the reserved face and upper body, Ohlsson could have been doing nothing more rote than counting out twenties from a teller's cage. Yet the sounds testified to a truth that, in solving puzzles of how his part fit with the orchestra and in the athleticism needed to do it, Ohlsson has few equals. In a section where the piano moves through a series of high glides, he synced up with two flutes precisely, even sneakily. And it was like that the whole way through: a pianism that delighted not so much in thwarting peril as in not recognizing it in the first place.
