New State Of The Union Question: Found A Date Yet?

During past State of the Union addresses, the aisle clearly divided the two parties ? as in this photo from President Obama's address last year, in which Democrats are standing and Republicans sitting.

The State of the Union address is a solemn affair. The president lays out his goals and accomplishments before a gathering of the powerful from across the government: Supreme Court justices, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and, of course, Congress.

It's serious business. But this year it's earned a new nickname from pundits and lawmakers alike: Date Night!

To show their commitment to bipartisanship, some senators and representatives have pledged to sit with a member of the other party while listening to the president's speech.

It may sound trivial, but to people who watch Congress like a sport, this will be riveting. It's like the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins hanging out for a post-game beer. Coke and Pepsi talking bottle tops. Mozart and Salieri comparing compositions.

One State of the Union "couple": Sen. Dick Durbin, the Democratic whip, and Republican Sen. Mark Kirk, both of Illinois.

Crossing The Aisle ? Literally

Now, to understand just how different this will be, you have to know how things usually work. First of all, the House of Representatives does not have assigned seating ? ever. In fact, says Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, if you watch the House on any normal day, the lawmakers milling around don't often sort themselves by party.

"Sometimes it comes down to region ? the Pennsylvania corner, the Massachusetts folks are here. Sometimes it's the Hispanic Caucus is here and the Black Caucus," she says. "Just depends on what the conversation is at the moment."

There is, though, a Democratic side and a Republican side. And on the night of the State of the Union, lawmakers always sit on their side, barring a lack of seats. The president enters the House through the aisle down the middle of the two sides. And that, by the way, is the aisle lawmakers cross when they "cross the aisle" to work with someone from the other party.

On Tuesday night, there will be a significant amount of aisle-crossing. Sen. Dick Durbin, the Democratic whip, is pairing up with a colleague from his home state.

"My new Senate Republican colleague from Illinois, Mark Kirk, and I are going to sit together," he told Fox News. "I'm bringing the popcorn; he's bringing the Coke with two straws. I'm just kidding, of course."

And the quintessential middle-America Republican, Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn, will sit with the quintessential East Coast Democrat, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer.

"We hope that many others will follow us," Schumer said. "Now, that's symbolic, but maybe it just sets a tone and everything gets a little bit more civil."

'It Really Doesn't Matter'

The idea does have its critics.

"You know, there's a lot of talk these days around here about where members of Congress are going to sit during the State of the Union address," Indiana Republican Mike Pence said recently on the House floor. "Well, I've been in Congress for 10 years, and I learned a long time ago, it doesn't really matter where you sit ? it matters where you stand."

And Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell brushed off the idea this weekend, saying people can certainly mix it up, if they want.

But Coburn told NBC the two parties often don't approach each other with respect. "We talk past each other, not to each other," he said, and sitting together just might help.

Of course, Pelosi pointed out that as speaker, "I had been sitting next to Vice President Cheney for a long time."

Because for the last two years of the Bush administration, divided government put leaders of both parties on the dais for the State of the Union.

And now, with President Obama in the White House and a Republican majority in the House, divided government has returned. So the epic rivalry of Republicans vs. Democrats continues.

DB2 support for Django 1.2 is here

The latest release of the IBM Adapter for Django now supports Django 1.2. Aside from enabling you to use the most recent version of Django, this release adds a few new goodies into the mix, that I?m sure many will appreciate.

For example, IBM?s adapter (through the underlying DBI wrapper) now uses persistent connections, which are especially helpful when dealing with Django ? as it lacks connection pooling. (Of course DB2 also has the Connection Concentrator to aid in reducing the usage of server resources and improving scalability.)

Furthermore, the adapter adds support for the DECIMAL datatype, a necessary feature when dealing with money and currencies. Various enhancements and bug fixes were included too; check them out on Google Groups.

As a reminder, DB2 Express-C is an absolutely free of charge version of DB2 and it?s production ready (not a toy version). You can download it from here. Take it for a spin, experiment ? chances are you?ll like it. If you need a guide to getting started, be sure to check out this free e-book by my colleagues Raul, Ian, and Rav.

  1. What about informix support in the django adapter?

    • It isn?t officially supported yet, but it should work. Please refer to this thread in the support forum.

  2. you still need to install db2 on the machine that hosts the code to connect to the db2 server?

    • You only need the CLI client and the development headers to compile the drivers. You don?t need the whole server.

  3. wow, it?s wonderful, but it will be a better news if Django could possiblely support MongoDB

    • Apples and oranges. :)

  4. @Bingimar:
I don?t think you need DB2 on the Django machine.

At most, you?ll need the IBM Data Server Client for ODBC and CLI:
    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=4020&uid=swg21385217

  5. Hello,

Is it possible to use this driver to connect to a iSeries As400 db2 server ? Do we need some software installed on the server side ?

I got the Db2 express version running on my development computer but I got not look to connect to our Ibm server yet.

Any idea where I could find some help?

    • Yes, Herick, you can connect to System i; you will need DB2 Connect however. Please check with your DBA to see if your company already possesses a license.

      • DB2 Connect is this the same service need for ODBC support ? Because we are already capable of connecting to our iSeries system with ODBC.

        Thanks a lot

Computer Spying Tool To Find Out Undesirable Activity

As we know, besides the benefits generated, then there is also the resultant negative side, such as the following story. A few days ago my neighbor's fuss over his girl who knows a friend who was opening porn site in a telecommunications shop "WARNET". This was already going on within a rather long time, before the parents did not think his friends are often seen on the internet porn sites. Due to friend of his son's quiet compared to other children who were 11-year-old's this should not have happened if the parents or the shop manager of telecommunications services can filter or spying the computer certain sites to be no accessible to children under age.

For that reason we must be careful in watching our child while using the internet / computers. One way is to use a device that manufactured by www.brickhousesecurity.com, which is a tool that will the computer spy. The fact which I wrote before is true:
* About 15% of children admit to chatting with strangers online, including access to adult sites
* 1/3 of divorce litigation is caused by online affairs and,
* 25% of company time is spent by employees goofing off.

Once again, to prevent accessing adult sites / violence from the children, we can work at the computer spy tool set that will filter / block sites that we do not want that can not be opened by children. The tool from BrickHouse Security was claimed easy To Use & Undetectable Total Computer Spying Covertly Monitors Passwords, Chatting, Photos, Websites & More. Interesting to use it?

Ubuntu Vs. Windows: in a Nutshell

You may recall how Dell dug itself into an almighty hole last month, after proclaiming that Ubuntu was safer than Windows, before swiftly changing its mind and declaring itself more neutral than Switzerland.

Well, now the PC maker?s had time to think the matter through, another page has appeared on the Dell website, condensing the whole Windows vs Ubuntu debate into about 100 words.

From Dell?s perspective the choice is clear. You should choose Windows if (and I swear I?m not paraphrasing here):

  • You are already using WINDOWS programs (e.g. Microsoft Office, iTunes etc) and want to continue using them

  • You are familiar with WINDOWS and do not want to learn new programs for email, word processing etc

  • You are new to using computers

And you should plump for Ubuntu if:

  • You do not plan to use Microsoft WINDOWS

  • You are interested in open source programming

So, just to get this highly complex argument straight: you should use Windows if you?ve already used Windows or have never used Windows. And you should only think about Ubuntu if you?re an open-source programmer. Got it?

By the way, I?m writing a feature on Ubuntu 10.04 vs Windows 7 for the next issue of PC Pro, on sale 21 August. I?m not sure I can match the degree of sophistication in Dell?s carefully thought-out analysis, but I?ll give it a go...

Ableton Suite 8

Ableton Suite 8 packshot

Ableton Suite 8 is 50 percent live performance instrument, 50 per cent digital audio workstation?and 50 per cent remix tool. If that sounds like 150 per cent?it is! Based around the latest release of Ableton?s now legendary ?Live? application, it adds into the mix no less than ten instruments and sample libraries. If you?re not already familiar with Live, either you?re an Alpha Centaurian Ostrich, or a member of Status Quo. Either way, you can familiarise yourself with what it is and does here.

So what?s new? ?nuff stuff! Warping audio has always been at the heart of Live and not content to sit on their laurels, Ableton has introduced a brand new warping engine sporting a reworked interface featuring an enhanced ?Beats? mode with improved transient analysis, new transient loop & envelope controls and an improved ?Complex Pro? algorithm that uses Z Plane?s ?Elastique Pro? for complex polyphonic material. Both algorithms offer noticeable improvements, though, having tested them with a wide range of material, I?d suggest that for extreme speed ups of complex polyphonic samples with a strong rhythmic element (aka nicking other people?s tunes for mash ups), ?Beats? can offer the best results.

Ableton claim its reworked warping interface is more intuitive. I agree. Not that you?ll need to use it much, as Live is extremely good at doing the dirty work for you, but where adjustments are needed, you can simply drag the Warp Markers you?ll find pinned to your sample, along a fixed timeline.

If you zoom in (using a simple click and drag) you?ll see mini markers denoting the location of the transients. Mousing over these creates a pseudo ?Warp Marker?, which can be double clicked or dragged to create a real one.

Another headline feature is Live?s new Groove Engine. Clicking the library button displays the grooves folder, which contains ten sub folders full of grooves. Drag one onto your (audio or MIDI) clip and like so many thing in Live, et voil. You can even extract your own grooves by right clicking on an audio or MIDI clip and selecting ?Extract Groove(s)?. All grooves used in your set, appear in the Groove Pool, which offers opportunities for further manipulation. The kicker is that rather than just offer their own grooves, Ableton have included all of the grooves from Logic, Notator (which made me glow with the warm haze of nostalgia), the SP1200 and?wait for it?Akai?s MPC! This is serious news for anyone working within the realms of hip hop. Pair Live/Suite 8 with a control surface offering 12 or 16 drum pads and you?ll only be a pistol whipping away from triple platinum?dawg.

According to Ableton, one of the most requested features for Live has been a looper, so they?ve created one that is characteristically simple to use, yet which offers advanced functionality including endless overdubs, remote operation with a footswitch and automatic sync between multiple loopers. Best of all, dragging and dropping your loops into the clip view automatically creates clips and vice versa, though, somewhat annoyingly, reversals and pitch alterations do not get carried across when you do this. Expect to see laptops running Live at the feet of every solo performer in a pub near you soon.

Six other new effects are also included, chief amongst which must be the one that has been most conspicuously absent for the longest time?a vocoder. Offering 40 mono/stereo bands, a carrier that can take an audio feed from anywhere in live, use an internal noise generator, a monophonic pitch tracker or the modulator itself (for self vocoding) and an interesting variety of other controls including a knob for changing the frequency range of the filter bank, this is not your mamma?s vocoder!

Next up comes ?Multiband Dynamics?, which in addition to offering excellent multiband compression, includes some nicely funked up effects such as ?Broken Antenna? (a few more of which wouldn?t go amiss).

?Frequency Shifter? combines frequency shifting and ring modulation (for all the budding Dalek impersonators out there). ?Limiter? offers brick wall limiting and ?Overdrive? apparently ?models the circuits found in legendary stompboxes,? though quite which stompboxes are a mystery to me, since there are absolutely no clues. Nevertheless, it does the business.

There are a number of workflow enhancements, the biggest of which has to be the ability to group audio and MIDI tracks into Group tracks which can be folded and unfolded at the click of a mouse (in both the arrangement and session views). Nice!?As are the accompanying group launch buttons which launch all of the group?s contents simultaneously. Jamming on the same theme, when you have multiple tracks selected and you adjust one mixer or routing parameter, the same parameter is adjusted in all of the selected tracks.

Another key enhancement is the ability to create crossfades (with adjustable slopes) between adjacent clips in the arrangement window. The MIDI Editor has been reworked to offer a more consistent editing experience. A zoom slider has been added that allows you to zoom Live?s screen to anywhere between 50 and 200 per cent. This works very well and would be extremely useful if it wasn?t buried in a preferences menu. Why Ableton can?t just stick a zoom box on the main interface (as found on every bit of image editing software I can think of) is beyond me?

Other useful enhancements include a mini scrubable waveform display in the browser window and colour coding for pretty much everything ? tracks, scenes, macro controls, even rack chains. Like, psychedelic man.

But wait?that?s just what?s new in Live 8. As I said, Suite 8 bundles Live with ten instruments and sample libraries. Of these, ?Collision? is the new kid on the block. A physical modelling instrument designed to re-produce real percussive sounds, it offers offers a large hadron collider full of xylophones, glockenspiels, marimbas and percussion, though it can also be used to create otherworldly sounds. You can, amongst other things, change the beater material (glass, metal wood, nylon, or rubber) and your beating tool (beam, marimba, string, plate, membrane, pipe, or tube), though I couldn?t find any options for crop, cane, whip, leather or PVC.

Although it takes a little getting used to, Collision is capable of some really powerful sounds, including, with a bit of lateral programming, some earth shattering basses. What?s more, its resonator section has been spun off into a separate effect, called ?Corpus? that can be used to mess with your audio and the tuning of which can be controlled with a MIDI sidechain.

?Operator?, Live?s FM synth, has been completely overhauled and now sports loads of new functionality including extra filter types, improved envelopes, new modulation options and user definable waveforms courtesy of a new waveform editor that allows you to roll draw your own, all of which takes it to the next level.

The other instruments included in the bundle are ?Sampler?, which offers powerful sound design possibilities, can read almost any sample format you can think of and which integrates seamlessly into the Live workflow; ?Electric?, which uses the same technology found in Applied Acoustics? ?Lounge Lizard? to physically model the sound of Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos; ?Tension?, which is to stringed instruments what collision is to a good beating; and ?Analog?, which is American for Analogue and is, unsurprisingly, a physically modelled analogue synthesizer.

The ?Essential Instrument Collection 2?, or EIC2, as they?re calling it in hip circles, is a sample library (developed in conjunction with SONiVOX and Chocolate Audio) so huge that listing everything it has to offer would double the size of this review?and then some. Suffice it to say that it runs the gamut from acoustic to electric and back again, via an orchestra or two and does so extremely well.

Sitting halfway between EIC and and the aforementioned Ableton instruments are ?Session Drums?, which aims to obviate the need for a session drummer, ?Drum Machines?, which offers a variety of classic beatboxes and ?Latin Percussion?, which will have you doing the conga around your bedroom in less time than it takes to say ?Ai Carumba!?

Each uses Live?s ?Drum Racks? functionality to combine meticulously sampled and extremely convincing individual drums/percussive instruments into kits that are easily programmed from a keyboard, drum pad, or on screen using Live?s MIDI editor. However, as Ableton state, ?the greatest instruments in the world are no good unless you know how to play them?, which is why they?ve created and included accompanying MIDI clips and grooves. If you browse to the Clips>Drums folder, you will find three sub folders (one for each pseudo instrument) populated with Live sets containing all of these elements. Alternatively, each element can be accessed and used individual, by browsing to the appropriate folders.

Latin Percussion excels in this department, with 50 breathtaking Live sets encompassing everything from Brazilian to Afro-Cuban and African, that are dripping with authenticity.

Drum Machines offers 40 Live sets that are very good, but which lack some of the ?patterns? which one might expect, for example, of four 909 patterns, only one could be described as ?House?, though not in the classic 909 sense. Depending upon your perspective, this may be a good or a bad thing. Some people might suggest they already have enough such patterns provided by other software, while others may feel that relying upon third party software to provide what could be included here is defeating the object and that Suite 8 would be improved with the inclusion of more than just four Live sets for each of the ten drum machines on offer. Whichever camp you fall into, one thing is for sure, given the sheer quality of Session Drums (which has been massively multi-sampled using a multitude of micing techniques) the inclusion of just 17 Live sets for it (most of which have a limited number of variations) is a little disappointing as it barely scratches the surface of what one can or might want to do with a kit.

Session drums and EIC2 are only available with the boxed version of Suite 8 (not the downloadable one) and increase the price by 150 euros, which I?d say it?s well worth the difference. However, if you?re going to go for it, make sure you have enough time and hard drive space available as it took several hours to install (from three compressed dual layer DVDs) and occupies 45GB of hard drive space!

Finally, the big news is Max for Live, which builds the functionality of MSP?s Max programming environment directly into Live itself. This is an optional extra which must be purchased separately and one which I expect I?ll review in due course, but for anyone using Max, this is a huge deal.

Do I have any complaints? Unusually, just one. When installing Live 8, you are not given any choice of where the default library is installed. Instead, it is automatically installed as a sub folder in whatever location you specify for the program itself. This is all very well if you are running everything from one non partitioned hard drive, but if you want to install your sample library on a separate partition or drive, you must first let it install within the delegated sub folder, then go into the ?library? tab of Live?s preferences, then tell it you want to move the library, then tell it to copy the library to the new destination, then delete the old library. If that sounds onerous?it is! Ableton tell me they have removed the ability to specify a separate location for the library during installation that existed in Live 6 & 7 because it was confusing inexperienced users, which only goes to prove you can?t please all of the people all of the time? unless, of course, you provide simple (default) and advanced installation options, which is what I have suggested they do.

And so to the verdict. Ableton have managed to inject a raft of relevant and important new functionality and enhancements into Live 8 without affecting its legendary ease of use. The new effects range from the useful to the must have, the changes to Operator take it to the next level, Collision is a classic in the making, Drum Machines and Latin Percussion are excellent and the EIC and Session Drums significantly expand the scope and appeal of this package, making Suite 8 a killer product.

The Canadian ?Other? - cultural crossroads on a path to reconciliation.

When I was seventeen, I spent the summer working at a clothing shop on St-Catherine Street near Place-Des-Arts, I believe it was the first time it ever came to my attention that there existed a kind of legal gray zone between Canadians and First Nations.

A client handed me her I.D. card with her purchases one afternoon, and said she would not be paying the taxes because of her native status. In my rebellious young heart I rejoiced at the thought of someone finally sticking it to the ?Tax man? (and my employers ? somehow I felt our struggles were linked).

But like most Canadians, (I dare here assume) I didn?t know much about First Nations? place in our country, nor could I put myself in the shoes of a young person growing up in a reserve. The little I knew about the troubles facing indigenous communities in Quebec came from news reports on the Oka Crisis, in the late 80?s.

In fact, it wasn?t until I took a class in Conflict & Resolution at Concordia University that I was confronted with the evidence that for the last 100 years native children had been institutionalized in residential schools by the Federal Government, in an effort to assimilate them into the Canadian cultural melting pot. In that time span, over 150, 000 youths would pass through a system that stripped them of their social autonomy, broke up families and alienated children from a way of life and traditions that were already largely marginalized from the rest of society.

I was thus very happy to find Indian Road among the films submitted in our dossier on JHR?s DocFest (which is currently taking submissions for it?s 2010 edition ? deadline June 1st).

DocFest

I was touched by the film?s personal take on Audrey Redman?s, a residential school survivor, lengthy struggle for respect and closure.

It was 1957 when Redman was placed in St-Paul?s residential school, at the tender age of six. She spent the rest of her childhood years as a ward of the State; left much to her own devices under the stern eye of religious moralists, who were unqualified to provide the kind of nurturing environment that helps children thrive later in life. She recalls the public humiliation and general disorientation she experienced as a child, the malignant name-calling; ?Sauvage!? Several of Redman?s loved ones passed away as a result of the mistreatment and poor health that have been generally acknowledged to be a product of the residential school system.

?I think about people in Canada who come here and make their living.

They work hard. And maybe they?ve ran away from a land where they lost everything?

It?s happened to us here ? We?ve lost everything.?

While most residential schools were closed in the late 60?s, the last federally-run institution was shut down in Saskatchewan as late as 1996.

In the 1980?s former students began publicly disclosing the sexual and physical trauma they had been subjected to; which eventually led to, in 2007, the largest class action settlement in Canadian history. Still, the legacies endemic of the residential school system continue to affect and sustain disparities within indigenous communities.

?I feel like what is being done is not being done for our benefit. They want closure?Well, we?re still crying.?

In a panel discussion commemorating the 20 years since the Oka crisis hosted yesterday at Concordia University, a twenty-year-old activist from Six Nations Turtle Island deplored the lack of follow-up given to these kinds of events in the media and mainstream culture.

?They don?t teach Oka in schools. [?] Since it happened, that?s been my life. We still have that fight in us. I haven?t seen much change in Canada?s mindset.?

I can only hope that the Truth and Reconciliation initiated by the Federal Government which is to take place over the next 5 years will muster so good will in helping Canada come to terms with a ghastly past and educated the masses in hopes that, although the notion that one can sure for loss of culture is not proven, we can prevent victims from feeling like they are an embarrassment being swept under our constitutional rug.

If you would like to know more about the residential schools? legacy, please redirect your browsers to the Shingwauk Project and be ready to expand your cultural horizons, Canada. Happy trails.

Making Your Own Fishing Lures

Making fishing lures may be easy for the seasoned do-it-yourself angler. But the maintenance of these lures is just as important to ensure a tip-top condition.

After buying or making the fishing lures there is still the responsibility of taking care of and repairing them so that they are always in good condition. This requires some effort and time but is usually easy for the angler who makes his own fishing lures.

Since he makes them and puts them together, he also knows how to take them apart and repair them. He also has the tools and fishing lure parts necessary for such work. All the tools required to assemble the parts and make the lures are explained on this page at http://www.make-your-own-fishing-lures.com/hand-tools.html .

Fishing lures in general do not require much care when storing them in a home or shop. The best idea is to put them into cabinet drawers or individual boxes so that they can be found easily and can be kept dry. In humid climates or near the seashore it is important not to expose the metal parts to the air; otherwise, hooks will rust and other metals will corrode.

Fishing lures that have feathers or hair should be kept in airtight containers so that moths and other insects or small animals will not get to them. This also applies to new fishing lures that haven't yet been used. Lures which have been used require considerable care if you want to get the maximum use from them. Freshwater fishing lures usually require less care and repair than saltwater ones.

In general, when examining any fishing lure you have made or bought it's a wise policy to repair it if you are the least bit doubtful about its condition. Repairing usually means sandpapering the part of the lure body that is slightly chipped and then touching up with a small brush, using enamels or lacquers.

Replace the hooks with new ones if they are badly rusted. When doing this it is important to use the same size and weight as the old ones so that the action of the fishing lure is not changed in any way. If the damage is too bad and the lure cannot be repaired, throw it away after salvaging any usable parts.

It doesn't pay to take chances with a fishing lure that is weak in any way. You may hook a record fish but lose it if the lure is not dependable. Many anglers who buy their fishing lures in tackle stores often use them until they fall apart, before buying new ones. But if you make your own fishing lures you can afford to use only those that are still in good condition.

It is better to be safe than sorry.

Goa to host national seminar on food processing

Goa will host a national seminar on food-processing later this month which is expected work out modalities to boost the sagging agricultural sector in the coastal state.Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industries (GCCI) along with several government departments have organised the seminar on January 29 which will have think tanks, experts and central government officials, deliberating on the prospects of this industry.

?Development of food processing industry can help in arresting the decline of agriculture in the state and also provide good employment opportunities to local youth,? Sangam Kurade, Chairman, Food Processing Committee, GCCI, told reporters here today. He said that several food processing units in Goa have to out source the raw material from outside the state borders as it is not available within the state.

?Goa has a firm preparing tomato ketchup but there are no tomatoes growing in the state,? Lyrics Tattoos

tattoo designs

Everyone has at least one favorite song. This song speaks to you, describes you and your life perfectly, has kept you emotionally centered, and generally happy. For some people, this one perfect song has meant the world to them, and they decide to keep that amazing music with them forever. Lyrics tattoos may not be exceptionally common, but for those who get them, they are just as important as the music itself.

The majority of lyrics tattoos feature lyrics in a flowing cursive style; however, you can use a variety of different fonts, depending on where you place them on your body. Many people like to use the full lyrical text, and so you may want to use a finer, smoother font if you choose to place the words on a smaller area such as an arm or a leg. One alternative to this would be to place different parts of the song on different areas of the body. For example, you could place the chorus on one arm, a verse on the other, the refrain on the chest, and any further verses on the lower stomach. If you would prefer to use a bolder font on a small area of the body, you might also have the options of using only a specific part of the lyrics; only using the chorus once, or wrapping the words tightly around the body part.

Symbols and images can also be utilized to enhance lyrics tattoos. Some people may choose to underline important phrases with vines, or border the body of the text with flowers, stars, or chains. Candles may be placed under or above the text to ?illuminate? the words, or they may be given the appearance of being burnt or etched into the skin. Some people like their lyrics tattoos to follow a theme; this is especially true for more modern music where the musician may use very distinctive art for their albums, or may have an identifiable band logo. For more classical lyrics, you may also include a portrait of the artist behind or next to the lyrics. One unusual idea would be to place certain lyrics within the eyes and mouth of the pictured musician. Other musical paraphernalia is also used in this style. You may see lyrics placed on guitars or drums, or you may see them placed above musical notes that fit with the words.

Music speaks to us, and there is no better way to express your passion for it than with lyrics tattoos.

Milwaukee Art Museum a Wisconsin Treasure

Milwaukee Art Museum a Wisconsin Treasure

"The Milwaukee Art Museum is a marvel of architecture and engineering that owes its existence to Santiago Calatrava, whose role in its expansion project turned the Museum into a cultural cornerstone for national and international visitors."

Its a bright, clear day in Milwaukee. The downtown shoreline shimmers under the radiance of a sun that is dazzling in intensity. Its luminous glow lights up the visually stunning structure of gleaming steel and concrete that is the Milwaukee Art Museum. Gracing the citys downtown lakefront area, the Museum is a marvel of architecture and engineering that owes its existence to the imagination and ingenuity of its creator, Santiago Calatrava. His role in the Museums monumental expansion project, completed in October 2001, has turned the Museum into a cultural cornerstone for national and international visitors to the Milwaukee community and region.

Calatrava, an internationally renowned architect, artist, and engineer, conceived and built the Museums 142,050-square-foot Quadracci Pavilion as the first Calatrava-designed structure to be completed in the United States. The Calatrava-designed Reiman Bridge, a 250-foot-long suspended pedestrian bridge boasting an unusual 200-foot angled mast with cables, leads to the Museums main entrance. The Museums crowning glory is the elegant Brise Soleil, a moveable wing-like sunscreen that rests atop the parabolic-shaped, glass-enclosed Windhover Hall, with its 90-foot high ceiling. Comprised of 72 steel fins, the Brise Soleil has a wingspan of 217 feet at its widest point. The "wings" also "flap" (close and open) each day at noon creating a moving sculpture. Time Magazine called the Calatrava-designed structures the "Best Design of 2001".

The vast complex sparkles with color and texture. Inside are permanent collection galleries, a large museum store and auditorium, and constantly changing feature exhibitions such as Rembrandt and His Time: Masterworks from the Albertina Museum, Vienna, which runs through January 8, 2006. The show was organized in conjunction with the 400th anniversary of the artists birth and explores the pivotal and influential role of Rembrandts art. Included are 27 of his drawings and prints along with some of the greatest art ever produced by Netherlands artists. To complement this display is the Milwaukee Art Museums permanent collection of 17th century Dutch paintings and 18th century French paintings.

The Museum also boasts a large collection of 19th Century American paintings, furniture, ceramics, glass, silver, and other works as well as an extensive exhibit of modern American and European art, especially with regard to European modernism during the first half of the 20th Century. Important pieces such as Robert Henris "The Art Student", and George Bellows' "The Sawdust Trail" can be found here.

An unusual permanent collection of 22 paintings by celebrated artist Georgia OKeeffe can be found in the museums Bradley Galleries-making the museum a leading repository for the famed artists paintings and the only dedicated Georgia OKeeffe gallery east of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Other important acquisitions include contemporary works by Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, Alexander Calder, Robert Motherwell and Frank Stella. The Milwaukee Art Museum also holds an excellent photography collection that is a "must" for anyone who is a fan of modern and contemporary masters such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and the controversial Robert Mapplethorpe.

Strolling through the museums many galleries, or stopping to watch the Brise Soleil open its wings to the sky at noon, you cant help but feel that you are experiencing something very different. The Milwaukee Art Museum is, itself, an extraordinary accomplishment that should be on the "dont-miss" list of every visitor to this city by the lake.

Comment on Digital Strips Episode 228 ? Book Club: Templar, AZ ? 4th Edition by xiao mao

It?s time again to gather at Daku?s house for another Digital Strips Book Club! I brought lemon squares and my recipe for those Swedish meatballs and I hope you read the assigned pages for this month. We don?t? well, we don?t have too much to say about Chapter 4 because it embodies the antithesis of that classic Elvis tune (a little less action, a little more conversation).

But we kick things off with a team-up effort on the part of Rosscott and Caldy, both so named because they live on the Internet. Their comics? Respectively:

After a mutual friend of theirs was wrongly ripped off, intellectual property style, they decided to collaborate on a comic/flowchart (see als0: here) to determine whether or not you, the average-to-above-average Internet user, are harming the Web with your ability to give credit where credit is due. We debate the effectiveness and necessity to point out these facts to those who don?t seem to care about them in the first place.

Amongst this debate, I?d be remiss if I didn?t correct the first of my many mistakes in giving you the name of the store where you can find the fruits of this labor:

Another online shop destination that offers various shirts for geeks, supposedly (miraculously) devoid of any copyright infringement or IP theft:

Finally, we tardily note the rewarding of the Xeric Grant to Steve LeCoulliard.

His work on Much the Miller?s Son (which we reviewed here) is both old-school and rowdy, never anything less than hilarious and professional. This grant will help him produce Book 3 of his comic and couldn?t be granted to a more deserving cartoonist.

The Toothaches? ?Sisyphus? takes us into our second segment, where we give our thoughts on the fourth chapter of Templar, AZ. I?ll let that conversation speak for itself, but needless to say we hope the comic finds a new drive and purpose in the next chapter.

Regardless of where we end up at the end of this Book Club, I?ll be glad I read this comic for myself, so the opinions I have about it are none but my own. I encourage you to follow along with us and do the same!

Finds by Julie Completes Two Major Renovations, Designing Modern Technology Behind Old World Charm

Finds by Julie, Boston based lifestyle enhancement firm, interior designers, part of International Antiques Network completes two major renovation projects combining the best of new technology with classic, old world antique charm.

PR9.NET July 21, 2010 - Boston, MA - Is it possible to preserve old world charm while adding modern, high tech comfort and efficiency? Boston based antiques, interior design and lifestyle enhancement firm, Finds by Julie, a subsidiary of International Antiques Network LLC (IAN), are world class specialists, a creative force bringing their clients the best of both worlds. Two major projects recently completed clearly demonstrate this talent.

Julie and Craig Hawley, co-founders of Finds by Julie and executive board members of International Antiques Network, working with their hand-picked team which includes five designers, three general contractors, and some 25 subcontractors, a Bang & Olufson rep and two fabric houses in London, brought their combined talents to bear in two major renovations completed in the last nine months.

The first was a total, five-floor renovation of a 200 year-old Beacon Hill, Boston brownstone, a two-family unit which they converted back into a single family home, restored to all of its former splendor, with some very modern touches. This was a 15-month project which included replacing all the HVAC in walls made of 200 year-old horsehair plaster. They put in three new baths, a first floor powder room that looks more like a grotto than a powder room, with an 18th century lavabo, a vessel sink made from a 200 year-old copper bowl with a gargoyle for a faucet head, and wallpaper made from crocodile skin. They assembled a French country kitchen suite facing a secret walled-in garden complete with herbs, flowers and a romantic French tabletop fire pit gazing off to an 18th century lavabo wall fountain; they brought back ceiling medallions from Venice, violins from London and a piano from Prague. They installed a built-in, lighted display cabinet for an exquisite Royal Crown Derby collection in the second floor dining room. For much of the furniture to be moved in, walls had to be removed and then replaced. Furniture was craned in through the windows and over the roof, and the city street had to be closed for twelve hours while this was going on. The ultra modern comforts and high technology included B&O equipment throughout, two new offices fully equipped, a biometric fingerprint reader front door access system, flat-screen TVs disguised as mirrors over the fireplace among others. The result is a beautiful home with its original, early 19th century charm concealing all the convenience and luxury that the 21st century can provide.

Their client was delighted: "Finds by Julie is a gem. With a sense of style that takes that of Bunny Williams to the next level, Julie transformed our home into an elegant, but highly livable oasis! Such attention to detail in every way. Julie's forte is understanding how people want to live and then creating and styling what I would call lifestyle vignettes around those preferences. She has a keen eye for taking the unusual artifact and making it into its own statement. The result is a home that is unique, warm, welcoming and wonderful!"

The other major renovation project was a three-month facelift of a Marblehead beach house, including a new roof, new windows, new paint throughout, darker ceilings and lighter walls, a gentleman's office with a Hemingway feel to it, in dark colors played off rattans and palm trees, replete with nautical art an office where anyone would love to sit and write. More furniture was chosen to supplement the great furniture already in the house, and new artwork found for all the walls. The result? The owner now prefers to spend the summer there and drive the 45 minutes into the city.

Not all of the projects undertaken by Finds by Julie are of such major scope. They specialize in remodeling kitchens (by Julie, for whom the whole adventure began in the kitchen) and offices (by Craig, who works hard to combine modern, high tech office equipment with the beautiful furniture and trappings of times gone by). Both trained by the Ritz Carlton LLC and schooled in butlering, they offer their clients a white glove service, managing the team behind the scenes, treating the client, and the vendors and subcontractors with respect, transparency and truth.

Finds by Julie delights in creating "the home that gives back." An eye for amazing, cool finds from earlier times, a space to set them in, a combination which is elegant, comfortable, relaxing and which enhances the lifestyle of the occupant. And their motto? "Don't just dream do!"

Dr. David Kingsley, the only Trichologist with PhD in Hair Loss Research, Introduces British Science Formulations 4-Step Hair Loss Treatment System

The once primarily exclusive treatment for hair loss developed by Dr. David H. Kingsley is available nationwide on his new website, www.hairandscalp.com. The formula is now available to the public.

PR9.NET November 13, 2010 - British Science Formulations 4-Step System, the exclusive hair loss treatment system created by Dr. David H. Kingsley, is now available nationwide. British Science Corporation announces the launch of a new website, www.hairandscalp.com, through which British Science Formulations hair loss treatment products, along with Dr. Kingsley's award winning book, "The Hair-Loss Cure: A Self-Help Guide", will now be accessible to millions of people suffering from hair loss.

Developed by Dr. David H. Kingsley, one of the world's preeminent trichologists, British Science Formulations 4-Step System is a comprehensive, clinically-tested hair loss treatment system that has been scientifically formulated to treat all major types of hair loss. For over 16 years Dr. Kingsley has used these very products in his trichology clinics to help thousands of patients overcome hair loss.

Trichology, a branch of medicine focused on the study of the hair and scalp, approaches hair loss from a scientific perspective, seeking to not only improve the condition, but to also address the psychological impact it can have on those who suffer. "For years I struggled with thinning hair and despaired when I looked at myself in the mirror. I was too young, I thought, but with Dr. Kingsley's counsel and British Science Formulations 4-Step System, my condition has improved enormously and I feel more confident than I have in years." Scott Thompson said.

"Considering that hair loss affects approximately 85% of men and 60% of women at some point in their lives, there has and will always be the desire to find real solutions," Dr. Kingsley said. "While I originally developed British Science Formulations 4-Step System for use within my trichology clinics, I wanted to find a way to make the system available to all those suffering from hair loss. The website makes this possible."

The new site, www.hairandscalp.com launched on November 8th, and features the complete British Science Formulations product line once only available through British Science Corporation Trichology Clinics in New York.

Equality Act 2010

This Act, 251 pages long, is intended to harmonise and, in some cases extend, discrimination laws on the 'protected characteristics' of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation. It also provides for ministers to amend UK regulation to bring it into line with EU law, for changes to tribunal procedures, a public sector duty to promote equalities, duties on employers and enforcement.

It involves not only the duty of equality to employees, but also in service delivery to patients.

3TB Hard Drives Coming, but You?ll need a new Computer

Hard drive manufacturer Seagate has confirmed to UK website Thinq that 3TB hard drives are definitely on the plan for 2010.

3TB hard drives The only problem? If you?re using a 32-bit version of a Windows operating system (which is ? most people), you may end up seeing as little as 990MB of that huge storage capacity because of limitations to the Logical Block Addressing (LBA) measures used to access the space. Current PC standard for LBA cannot address more than 2.1TB of storage in a single drive.

The limitation appears set to become the "Y2K problem" for hard drives with the limitation of the LBA system setup by Microsoft and IBM back in 1980. Apparently, no-one expected anyone to need more than 2.1TB of storage.

Seagate product manager Barbara Craig told Thinq support for Long LBA is required for both hardware and software to handle the new drives which limits operating system support to 64-bit Windows 7 and Vista plus modified versions of Linux. The new 3TB drive won?t work with Windows XP at all.

The problem with hardware is more difficult to fix.

Drives of greater than 2.1TB will also require a GUID Partition Table ? a system implemented in Apple computers ? because the old Master Boot Record (MBR) method of noting storage particulars again can?t work with drives greater than 2.1TB. Intel announced last year that it was looking to improve the old DOS-look BIOS system with EFI ? Extensible Firmware Interface.

However, very few PC motherboards currently support EFI and that pretty much knocks things on the head right there in terms of upgrading.

So if you?re thinking about turning your PC into a storage farm, chances are you?re going to need to start from scratch with a new PC to go with it.
