British university sends smartphone into space

Mobile phones can turn up in most unlikely places ?as everyone who's mislaid one will know ? but researchers at the University of Surrey and Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) have taken things to an extreme.

The boffins have developed 'STRaND-1', a satellite based around that will be launched into orbit around the Earth later this year. STRaND-1 (Surrey Training, Research and Nanosatellite Demonstrator) has been developed to demonstrate that working satellites could be constructed through the use of off-the-shelf components.

However, because smartphones have not been developed to be used as satellites, there needs to be some extensive testing. A powerful computers housed at the Surrey Space Centre, which is based at the university, will test the phone's workings once it's in space. The computer will check which components of the phone are operating normally and when components malfunction in orbit for recovery

STRaND-1's lead researcher Dr Chris Bridges said, "Smartphones pack lots of components ? such as sensors, video cameras, GPS systems and Wi-Fi radios ? that are technologically advanced but a fraction of the size, weight and cost of components used in existing satellite systems. And because many smartphones also run on free operating systems that lend themselves to online software developers, the creators of applications ('apps') for smartphones could feasibly develop apps for satellites."

The collaboration between SCC and SSTL means that the company benefits from the University of Surrey's space engineering research, while researchers and students get the chance to design, build and fly real space hardware alongside engineers from a world-leading small satellite provider.

And this collaboration could have far-reaching implications for the industry. "If a smartphone can be proved to work in space, it opens up lots of new technologies to a multitude of people and companies for space who usually can't afford it. It's a real game-changer for the industry," said Dr Bridges.

?In Africa, there are no human rights,
there is only the strongest?s right.?

-Laurent N?Kunda, (Congolese schoolteacher turned Warlord)

In America, if you believe a study by Dr. Paul Slovic quoted in Eric Metzgar?s documentary film, compassion cannot be extended to more than one individual, else it almost entirely dissipates. The results are worse, even, when we try to rationalize humanitarian crises with numbers and statistics; then, it seems, people simply tune-out?So how do we, as agents of social change, get the leisurely readers of today to pay attention?

While there are no easy answers, one journalist has made a point tackling issues of poverty and human rights infringements one sob story at a time.

REPORTER follows Nick Kristof, an Op-Ed columnist from The New York Times, as he roams the eastern Congo in search of stories that will make the rest of us care. To do so, Kristof, who has traveled the world over, feels that it is necessary to record ONLY the MOST heart-wrenching tales for posterity. In this way, he hopes to move his savvy readership into feeling empathy for strangers slowly wasting away of neglect and malnutrition on a distant continent.

Kristof has been criticized for being more of an advocate than a journalist, and for dabbling in sensationalism and victimization as a means to push his ?do-godder? agenda. But regardless of the ethics in questions, it is impossible to think that Kristof is not dedicated to bringing about radical social change, even as we cringe at hearing him admit he has reached a point where he can listen quite dispassionately to the worst stories. There are so many, after all.

The winner of two Pulitzers, Kristof is best known for his reporting on human rights abuses, and most notably perhaps, for putting the crisis in Darfur on the map of American consciousness.

The film also features the two 2007 finalists of the ?Win-a-Trip With Nick Kristof? contest, initiated by the journalist so American citizens could witness firsthand the harsh global realities he encounters when reporting from the field. Their reflections were included alongside Kristof?s bi-weekly columns throughout the trip, and can be read on their blog: Two For The Road.

Missing, however, is the insightful commentary into the ?why?s? and ?how?s? that surround the conflict zones Kristof covers - he is so busy telling the one story to convince the many. Nevertheless, like any self-respecting reporter, Kristof won?t shy away from getting both sides of the story, and has made a point of interviewing both victims and perpetrators of human rights abuses. In REPORTER, Kristof?s team travels deep into the eastern Congo to visit Laurent N?Kunda, a rebel Congolese leader rumored to have been jailed, early last year, by the Rwandan authorities for his participation in war crimes.

And if truly compassion is an unstable emotion, we should always let films like REPORTER push us over the edge.

Available on DVD March 21, 2010.

Ableton Suite 8

Ableton Suite 8 packshot

Ableton Suite 8 is 50 percent live performance instrument, 50 per cent digital audio workstation?and 50 per cent remix tool. If that sounds like 150 per cent?it is! Based around the latest release of Ableton?s now legendary ?Live? application, it adds into the mix no less than ten instruments and sample libraries. If you?re not already familiar with Live, either you?re an Alpha Centaurian Ostrich, or a member of Status Quo. Either way, you can familiarise yourself with what it is and does here.

So what?s new? ?nuff stuff! Warping audio has always been at the heart of Live and not content to sit on their laurels, Ableton has introduced a brand new warping engine sporting a reworked interface featuring an enhanced ?Beats? mode with improved transient analysis, new transient loop & envelope controls and an improved ?Complex Pro? algorithm that uses Z Plane?s ?Elastique Pro? for complex polyphonic material. Both algorithms offer noticeable improvements, though, having tested them with a wide range of material, I?d suggest that for extreme speed ups of complex polyphonic samples with a strong rhythmic element (aka nicking other people?s tunes for mash ups), ?Beats? can offer the best results.

Ableton claim its reworked warping interface is more intuitive. I agree. Not that you?ll need to use it much, as Live is extremely good at doing the dirty work for you, but where adjustments are needed, you can simply drag the Warp Markers you?ll find pinned to your sample, along a fixed timeline.

If you zoom in (using a simple click and drag) you?ll see mini markers denoting the location of the transients. Mousing over these creates a pseudo ?Warp Marker?, which can be double clicked or dragged to create a real one.

Another headline feature is Live?s new Groove Engine. Clicking the library button displays the grooves folder, which contains ten sub folders full of grooves. Drag one onto your (audio or MIDI) clip and like so many thing in Live, et voil. You can even extract your own grooves by right clicking on an audio or MIDI clip and selecting ?Extract Groove(s)?. All grooves used in your set, appear in the Groove Pool, which offers opportunities for further manipulation. The kicker is that rather than just offer their own grooves, Ableton have included all of the grooves from Logic, Notator (which made me glow with the warm haze of nostalgia), the SP1200 and?wait for it?Akai?s MPC! This is serious news for anyone working within the realms of hip hop. Pair Live/Suite 8 with a control surface offering 12 or 16 drum pads and you?ll only be a pistol whipping away from triple platinum?dawg.

According to Ableton, one of the most requested features for Live has been a looper, so they?ve created one that is characteristically simple to use, yet which offers advanced functionality including endless overdubs, remote operation with a footswitch and automatic sync between multiple loopers. Best of all, dragging and dropping your loops into the clip view automatically creates clips and vice versa, though, somewhat annoyingly, reversals and pitch alterations do not get carried across when you do this. Expect to see laptops running Live at the feet of every solo performer in a pub near you soon.

Six other new effects are also included, chief amongst which must be the one that has been most conspicuously absent for the longest time?a vocoder. Offering 40 mono/stereo bands, a carrier that can take an audio feed from anywhere in live, use an internal noise generator, a monophonic pitch tracker or the modulator itself (for self vocoding) and an interesting variety of other controls including a knob for changing the frequency range of the filter bank, this is not your mamma?s vocoder!

Next up comes ?Multiband Dynamics?, which in addition to offering excellent multiband compression, includes some nicely funked up effects such as ?Broken Antenna? (a few more of which wouldn?t go amiss).

?Frequency Shifter? combines frequency shifting and ring modulation (for all the budding Dalek impersonators out there). ?Limiter? offers brick wall limiting and ?Overdrive? apparently ?models the circuits found in legendary stompboxes,? though quite which stompboxes are a mystery to me, since there are absolutely no clues. Nevertheless, it does the business.

There are a number of workflow enhancements, the biggest of which has to be the ability to group audio and MIDI tracks into Group tracks which can be folded and unfolded at the click of a mouse (in both the arrangement and session views). Nice!?As are the accompanying group launch buttons which launch all of the group?s contents simultaneously. Jamming on the same theme, when you have multiple tracks selected and you adjust one mixer or routing parameter, the same parameter is adjusted in all of the selected tracks.

Another key enhancement is the ability to create crossfades (with adjustable slopes) between adjacent clips in the arrangement window. The MIDI Editor has been reworked to offer a more consistent editing experience. A zoom slider has been added that allows you to zoom Live?s screen to anywhere between 50 and 200 per cent. This works very well and would be extremely useful if it wasn?t buried in a preferences menu. Why Ableton can?t just stick a zoom box on the main interface (as found on every bit of image editing software I can think of) is beyond me?

Other useful enhancements include a mini scrubable waveform display in the browser window and colour coding for pretty much everything ? tracks, scenes, macro controls, even rack chains. Like, psychedelic man.

But wait?that?s just what?s new in Live 8. As I said, Suite 8 bundles Live with ten instruments and sample libraries. Of these, ?Collision? is the new kid on the block. A physical modelling instrument designed to re-produce real percussive sounds, it offers offers a large hadron collider full of xylophones, glockenspiels, marimbas and percussion, though it can also be used to create otherworldly sounds. You can, amongst other things, change the beater material (glass, metal wood, nylon, or rubber) and your beating tool (beam, marimba, string, plate, membrane, pipe, or tube), though I couldn?t find any options for crop, cane, whip, leather or PVC.

Although it takes a little getting used to, Collision is capable of some really powerful sounds, including, with a bit of lateral programming, some earth shattering basses. What?s more, its resonator section has been spun off into a separate effect, called ?Corpus? that can be used to mess with your audio and the tuning of which can be controlled with a MIDI sidechain.

?Operator?, Live?s FM synth, has been completely overhauled and now sports loads of new functionality including extra filter types, improved envelopes, new modulation options and user definable waveforms courtesy of a new waveform editor that allows you to roll draw your own, all of which takes it to the next level.

The other instruments included in the bundle are ?Sampler?, which offers powerful sound design possibilities, can read almost any sample format you can think of and which integrates seamlessly into the Live workflow; ?Electric?, which uses the same technology found in Applied Acoustics? ?Lounge Lizard? to physically model the sound of Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos; ?Tension?, which is to stringed instruments what collision is to a good beating; and ?Analog?, which is American for Analogue and is, unsurprisingly, a physically modelled analogue synthesizer.

The ?Essential Instrument Collection 2?, or EIC2, as they?re calling it in hip circles, is a sample library (developed in conjunction with SONiVOX and Chocolate Audio) so huge that listing everything it has to offer would double the size of this review?and then some. Suffice it to say that it runs the gamut from acoustic to electric and back again, via an orchestra or two and does so extremely well.

Sitting halfway between EIC and and the aforementioned Ableton instruments are ?Session Drums?, which aims to obviate the need for a session drummer, ?Drum Machines?, which offers a variety of classic beatboxes and ?Latin Percussion?, which will have you doing the conga around your bedroom in less time than it takes to say ?Ai Carumba!?

Each uses Live?s ?Drum Racks? functionality to combine meticulously sampled and extremely convincing individual drums/percussive instruments into kits that are easily programmed from a keyboard, drum pad, or on screen using Live?s MIDI editor. However, as Ableton state, ?the greatest instruments in the world are no good unless you know how to play them?, which is why they?ve created and included accompanying MIDI clips and grooves. If you browse to the Clips>Drums folder, you will find three sub folders (one for each pseudo instrument) populated with Live sets containing all of these elements. Alternatively, each element can be accessed and used individual, by browsing to the appropriate folders.

Latin Percussion excels in this department, with 50 breathtaking Live sets encompassing everything from Brazilian to Afro-Cuban and African, that are dripping with authenticity.

Drum Machines offers 40 Live sets that are very good, but which lack some of the ?patterns? which one might expect, for example, of four 909 patterns, only one could be described as ?House?, though not in the classic 909 sense. Depending upon your perspective, this may be a good or a bad thing. Some people might suggest they already have enough such patterns provided by other software, while others may feel that relying upon third party software to provide what could be included here is defeating the object and that Suite 8 would be improved with the inclusion of more than just four Live sets for each of the ten drum machines on offer. Whichever camp you fall into, one thing is for sure, given the sheer quality of Session Drums (which has been massively multi-sampled using a multitude of micing techniques) the inclusion of just 17 Live sets for it (most of which have a limited number of variations) is a little disappointing as it barely scratches the surface of what one can or might want to do with a kit.

Session drums and EIC2 are only available with the boxed version of Suite 8 (not the downloadable one) and increase the price by 150 euros, which I?d say it?s well worth the difference. However, if you?re going to go for it, make sure you have enough time and hard drive space available as it took several hours to install (from three compressed dual layer DVDs) and occupies 45GB of hard drive space!

Finally, the big news is Max for Live, which builds the functionality of MSP?s Max programming environment directly into Live itself. This is an optional extra which must be purchased separately and one which I expect I?ll review in due course, but for anyone using Max, this is a huge deal.

Do I have any complaints? Unusually, just one. When installing Live 8, you are not given any choice of where the default library is installed. Instead, it is automatically installed as a sub folder in whatever location you specify for the program itself. This is all very well if you are running everything from one non partitioned hard drive, but if you want to install your sample library on a separate partition or drive, you must first let it install within the delegated sub folder, then go into the ?library? tab of Live?s preferences, then tell it you want to move the library, then tell it to copy the library to the new destination, then delete the old library. If that sounds onerous?it is! Ableton tell me they have removed the ability to specify a separate location for the library during installation that existed in Live 6 & 7 because it was confusing inexperienced users, which only goes to prove you can?t please all of the people all of the time? unless, of course, you provide simple (default) and advanced installation options, which is what I have suggested they do.

And so to the verdict. Ableton have managed to inject a raft of relevant and important new functionality and enhancements into Live 8 without affecting its legendary ease of use. The new effects range from the useful to the must have, the changes to Operator take it to the next level, Collision is a classic in the making, Drum Machines and Latin Percussion are excellent and the EIC and Session Drums significantly expand the scope and appeal of this package, making Suite 8 a killer product.

Springbox interactive agency develops branding for the Visual Arts Center

  • Leslie Lyon, Director of Public Affairs, College of Fine Arts, (512) 475-7033

Opening to the public in September 2010, the new Visual Arts Center (VAC) at The University of Texas at Austin welcomes a branding experience built from the ground up by the creative group of Springbox interactive agency.

As an adaptive reuse of the space in the Art Building formerly occupied by the Blanton Museum, the VAC is part of the Department of Art and Art History and will serve as an exhibition and research space highlighting internationally-acclaimed artists, students, faculty and alumni through its multiple programs.

The VAC branding was a pro-bono project by the Springbox creative group and a great opportunity to extend their talent to a prestigious, local institution. After touring the newly-remodeled 22,000 square feet of space within the department, the creative group broke into four teams, each of which generated concepts comprising logos, taglines, collateral examples, projection graphics and more.

The teams presented a range of ideas to the department committee, which included John Yancey, chair of the Department of Art and Art History and John D. Murchison Regents Professor in Art; Jade Walker, director of the VAC; Rachel Cook, marketing and public relations specialist and Hunter Thomas, public affairs specialist.

Walker says, "It was impressive to work on this project with a group that has such creative energy. Springbox was so professional at each turn and really brought unique ideas to the table."

From the body of distinct proposals, the committee had the challenging task of selecting one concept, which was further refined and now serves as the new logo and brand message for the VAC. The selected concept was created by Tricia Bayne, Tom Hudson, Gerren Lamson and Shelly Leyden. Each contributed to a brand identity for the VAC that captures the energy of the space and the artistic exploration and collaboration of the community.

"The VAC was a great exercise for the creative team, and an example of what we do best: building something unique for creative hearts and minds," says Adrian Taylor, Springbox group creative director. "The Springbox creative group looks forward to more team projects that will extend their talents to the Austin area."

EDS to Open 2 Outsourcing Centers in China

CIO ?

Electronic Data Systems (EDS) plans to open at least two outsourcing centers in China, hiring 2,000 staff over the next two years, a company spokesman said Thursday.

"China is a strategic growth market for EDS, both regionally and globally," said Ronald Tse, a spokesman for the company in Hong Kong.

EDS, which earlier this year moved its Asian headquarters to Shanghai from Australia, is in the process of identifying locations in China for two to three outsourcing centers, Tse said. These facilities, called global delivery centers, will offer a range of outsourced services, including IT outsourcing and hosting, for multinational and Chinese clients, he said.

"We are planning to open the first one within this year," Tse said, noting the company already has similar facilities in Malaysia and India.

To staff these centers, EDS plans to hire an additional 2,000 workers over the next two years, Tse said. The company currently employs 100 staff in China.

China has long been a center for low-cost manufacturing, and over the past few years it has become an increasingly important outsourcing center as well.

Last month, Unisys established an outsourcing center in Shanghai that will offer a range of services, including software development. Over the next three years, Unisys plans to expand these operations by hiring 1,000 workers and perhaps setting up similar centers in other Chinese cities.

3TB Hard Drives Coming, but You?ll need a new Computer

Hard drive manufacturer Seagate has confirmed to UK website Thinq that 3TB hard drives are definitely on the plan for 2010.

3TB hard drives The only problem? If you?re using a 32-bit version of a Windows operating system (which is ? most people), you may end up seeing as little as 990MB of that huge storage capacity because of limitations to the Logical Block Addressing (LBA) measures used to access the space. Current PC standard for LBA cannot address more than 2.1TB of storage in a single drive.

The limitation appears set to become the "Y2K problem" for hard drives with the limitation of the LBA system setup by Microsoft and IBM back in 1980. Apparently, no-one expected anyone to need more than 2.1TB of storage.

Seagate product manager Barbara Craig told Thinq support for Long LBA is required for both hardware and software to handle the new drives which limits operating system support to 64-bit Windows 7 and Vista plus modified versions of Linux. The new 3TB drive won?t work with Windows XP at all.

The problem with hardware is more difficult to fix.

Drives of greater than 2.1TB will also require a GUID Partition Table ? a system implemented in Apple computers ? because the old Master Boot Record (MBR) method of noting storage particulars again can?t work with drives greater than 2.1TB. Intel announced last year that it was looking to improve the old DOS-look BIOS system with EFI ? Extensible Firmware Interface.

However, very few PC motherboards currently support EFI and that pretty much knocks things on the head right there in terms of upgrading.

So if you?re thinking about turning your PC into a storage farm, chances are you?re going to need to start from scratch with a new PC to go with it.

Comment on Digital Strips Episode 228 ? Book Club: Templar, AZ ? 4th Edition by Rosscott

It?s time again to gather at Daku?s house for another Digital Strips Book Club! I brought lemon squares and my recipe for those Swedish meatballs and I hope you read the assigned pages for this month. We don?t? well, we don?t have too much to say about Chapter 4 because it embodies the antithesis of that classic Elvis tune (a little less action, a little more conversation).

But we kick things off with a team-up effort on the part of Rosscott and Caldy, both so named because they live on the Internet. Their comics? Respectively:

After a mutual friend of theirs was wrongly ripped off, intellectual property style, they decided to collaborate on a comic/flowchart (see als0: here) to determine whether or not you, the average-to-above-average Internet user, are harming the Web with your ability to give credit where credit is due. We debate the effectiveness and necessity to point out these facts to those who don?t seem to care about them in the first place.

Amongst this debate, I?d be remiss if I didn?t correct the first of my many mistakes in giving you the name of the store where you can find the fruits of this labor:

Another online shop destination that offers various shirts for geeks, supposedly (miraculously) devoid of any copyright infringement or IP theft:

Finally, we tardily note the rewarding of the Xeric Grant to Steve LeCoulliard.

His work on Much the Miller?s Son (which we reviewed here) is both old-school and rowdy, never anything less than hilarious and professional. This grant will help him produce Book 3 of his comic and couldn?t be granted to a more deserving cartoonist.

The Toothaches? ?Sisyphus? takes us into our second segment, where we give our thoughts on the fourth chapter of Templar, AZ. I?ll let that conversation speak for itself, but needless to say we hope the comic finds a new drive and purpose in the next chapter.

Regardless of where we end up at the end of this Book Club, I?ll be glad I read this comic for myself, so the opinions I have about it are none but my own. I encourage you to follow along with us and do the same!

Google Android tablets gain traction with developers

Apple iPad remains the top tablet targeted by app builders in survey

Although Apple's iPad remains number one in the hearts of tablet application developers, Google Android tablets are increasingly piquing programmers' interest, according to a survey conducted earlier this month.

In a survey of 2,235 developers by IDC and tools vendor Appcelerator, 74 percent of respondents were "very interested' in building applications for Android tablets, up from 62 percent in the previous iteration of the survey from last September. The formidable iPad attracted the interest of 87 percent of respondees, up 3 points from the last survey. A report based on the latest survey, entitled "Appcelerator IDC Mobile Developer Report, January 2011," is being released Tuesday.

[ RIM officials last week talked up enterprise plans for their BlackBerry and related products. | Stay on top of the latest issues in software development with InfoWorld's Developer World newsletter.]

"The interest has spiked significantly, where Android tablets are nearing iPads in their interest level," said Scott Schwarzhoff, Appcelerator vice president of marketing. Appcelerator sees a correlation between increased interest and the announcement of 85 Android tablets at this month's Computer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Developers listed price, minimized fragmentation, and the upcoming Honeycomb software as the most crucial factors for Android tablets to succeed. Developers are expected to build applications for newspapers, rich media, entertainment, and conferencing for Android tablets, Schwarzhoff said.

One factor that does not seem to be affecting interest in the Android platform overall was Oracle's lawsuit against Google claiming patent infringement. Almost no one was bothered by it in the last survey, and the issue was not even raised in the current survey, Schwarzhoff explained. "The common belief is that Oracle and Google will work it out," he said.

Appcelerator polled developers on their wish list for the upcoming iPad 2; new camera capabilities, a USB connector, and an improved retina display were all cited. Also, RIM's upcoming PlayBook tablet grew in interest from 16 percent of developers last September to 28 percent now.

There was good news for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 smartphone platform in Appcelerator's survey. "Windows Phone 7 came out better than expected," said Schwarzhoff. Interest in building for the software giant's new platform increased to 36 percent, up from 28 percent in the previous survey.

The new figure was just 2 percentage points behind the number of developers who want to build for RIM's far more established BlackBerry smartphone. BlackBerry had the interest of 34 percent of developers in the previous survey. The iPhone, however, drew the interest of 92 percent of developers; the figure was 91 percent last time around.

Expected Sales Increase Of Christmas Flowers

Leading online flower retailer Serenata is expecting a 30% boost in sales for its Christmas Flowers this year, indicating a steady strengthening in the UK financial system.

PR9.NET November 11, 2010 - LONDON, UK - UK homes will have much more than just presents under the tree for Christmas this year. Flowers for Christmas will also be on many shopping lists for, according to one of the leading online flower shops Serenata Flowers.

With festive floral product sales continuing to boost, it's a sure indication the UK economic climate is attaining ground and the recovery is well under way.

"We anticipate orders for Christmas flower arrangements to increase an additional 30% over last year. This suggests that the lower joblessness rate we've been experiencing in the UK combined with the growth we've had in the construction, manufacturing and hospitality industries is beginning to spread. Now, people not only have extra disposable income, but they are additionally less worried about falling back into recession," explained Peter Ahl, MD of the award-winning web florist Serenata Flowers.

The online florist has additionally experienced a substantial raise in the number of first Christmas orders, which implies shoppers have learned from the recession and are planning ahead.

"The numbers advise we'll have a much better Christmas across the board than we have the last few years. More consumers are preplanning their presents and we believe this is a direct result of the recession -- consumers are budgeting, saving and organising their purchasing, rather than impulse shopping," Ahl added.

Business is flourishing for online flower shops. The industry expects to sell more than half a million xmas flowers and bouquets this season alone. And according to Serenata's statistics, over fifty percent of all Christmas flower deliveries will be purchased online.

The Christmas delivery service is popular with customers outside the UK who would like to send flowers and gifts to friends and loved ones living in the UK. Serenata believes the growing number of British expats purchasing flowers online is a good sign that, while customers are spending more than they do during the economic downturn, travel budgets may perhaps however remain tight.

"Having Christmas flowers delivered is still one of the best ways to show someone love and affection, which may be extremely hard when long distances are involved. Mix wonderful roses and flowers of all kinds with the comfort of buying flowers on the web, nevertheless, and consumers can find the perfect present for everyone, no matter where they're in the world," said Ahl.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art

The Indianapolis Museum of Art: Edmund Tarbell, Richard B. Gruelle, Frank W. Benson, William Merritt Chase, John Sharman, John Cotman Sell, Rembrandt, Jan Brueghel the Elder
I?ve never been to Indiana, let alone to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, so this is not a first person account. It is rather the happy result of one of my art browsing habits, using the Museum Listing feature of the Athenaeum online art resource to browse a skimming of various museums? collections (see my post on The Athenaeum).

The Athenaeum?s page for the Indianapolis Museum of Art caught my attention with pieces by John Singer Sargent, Edmund Tarbell and William Merritt Chase.

On arriving at the museum?s site, I immediately clicked through to their collection of American Painting and Sculpture to 1945, and from there started browsing through the little interactive slide presentation for American Impressionism, one of my favorite schools of painting.

Though not the most convenient browsing arrangement (a simple page of thumbnails would be better, but museums seem to love these widgets), it is still a way into the collection, clicking on the thumbnails to particular piece, then clicking through to a page of works by that artist in the museum?s collection.

To my delight, I found that not only does the museum have a terrific collection of American Impressionism, which is deep for some artists, like William Merritt Chase, they also have a nice method of presentation for works in the collection.

Thumbnails are linked to a decently sized image that opens in a pop-up, instead of the tiny cramped Zooming windows favored by many museums, letting you get a much better feeling for the work as a whole.

In addition they often have several photos of the same work, some of which have color and value reference cards in the photos, making it possible to get an accurate take on the color of the image. What a great feature! So many images of artworks on the web are off-color, even those posted by the most prestigious museums.

My exploration of the site has been brief so far, and the images I?ve chosen to highlight are more representative of my own preferences than the museum?s collections, but I was also impressed with their holdings in European Painting and Sculpture.

One might wish for a list based browsing feature, allowing an easier grasp of the holdings in a particular area, but you can search the collections for specific artist, or using broader terms like, oh, say? ?American Impressionism?.

The collection online looks well worth investigating in depth, and of course, for those who live close enough to travel to the museum in person, a treat to visit.

Futures lower as investors await earnings blitz (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stock index futures were modestly lower on Tuesday as investors awaited another round of corporate earnings and continued to view the European economy with caution.

European shares were pressured after Britain's economy unexpected contracted in the fourth quarter and Spanish banks retreated after recent gains.

Dow component DuPont and Co (DD.N) reported a fourth-quarter profit that beat expectations and raised its 2011 outlook. The stock edged 0.5 percent higher to $49.15 in premarket trading.

Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N) and Travelers Cos Inc (TRV.N), two Dow components, also reported results early Tuesday. Verizon slid 0.7 percent to $35 before the bell as its profit just missed expectations.

Equities have advanced in recent weeks, in part on anticipation of strong corporate results. Some weak bank earnings last week contributed to a stalled rally, and the S&P ended a seven-week run of gains.

In a major week for earnings, Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N), 3M Co (MMM.N) and U.S. Steel Corp (X.N) are also due to report later in the day.

S&P 500 futures fell 4.1 points and were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures lost 12 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures dropped 10 points.

Shares of American Express Co (AXP.N) and Texas Instruments Inc (TXN.N) fell in extended trading late Monday after reporting results. American Express was pressured by an uncertain regulatory outlook, while TI's gross margins disappointed investors.

On the economic data front, the November S&P Case/Shiller Home Price Index will come out at 9 a.m. EST (1400 GMT). Economists expect a drop of 0.8 percent versus a 1.0 percent fall in the previous month.

The Conference Board will release its January reading on consumer confidence at 10 a.m. EST (1500 GMT) Economists see confidence rising slightly to 54.3 from December's 52.5.

The International Monetary Fund revised its forecast for world growth higher, citing the impact from a package on U.S. taxes.

President Barack Obama will give his annual State of the Union address Tuesday evening and is expected to focus on jobs and the economy.

Stocks rose Monday on strength in natural resource and technology shares as the recent positive momentum returned.

Applauding the orchestra for offering encores

Sibelius wasn't anywhere else on Noseda's program, yet Waltz Triste is wrought of the same easily recognizable material - that is, the stuff of top-40 classical radio, which made it most apt.

The original repertoire for this night was to have included Prt's Collage ber B-A-C-H and Bruckner's Symphony No. 7. But when back troubles led to the cancellation of conductor Donald Runnicles, that somewhat specialized repertoire disappeared. Nzet-Sguin, already in town, would have been the obvious replacement, but "Yannick was unfortunately not available to do this week," an orchestra spokeswoman said. "He also was ill last week, so this period is much-needed additional rest for him."

Noseda was nearby conducting the Metropolitan Opera and agreed to add these two concerts. (You can find him Saturday leading a matinee of La Traviata, and still have time to get to Verizon Hall for his Philadelphia Orchestra evening appearance. So, presumably, will he.)

Runnicles' program would have been more interesting. The Bach Concerto for Two Violins and String Orchestra was kept, but Prt and Bruckner were replaced with Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances for the Lute, Suite No. 3, and Dvorak's Symphony No. 8. The populist theme didn't exactly flood the hall with listeners, but, thankfully, Noseda's interpretations were hardly generic.

Motorola Xoom vs. iPad: Don't Bother Comparing Specs

The rumored pricing of Motorola's Xoom tablet at $700 has triggered the expected reaction among tech watchers: Decide whether it's better than the iPad based on specs.

Don't fall into that trap.

Here's what we know so far about the Xoom: Running Android 3.0, the Xoom has a dual core Tegra 2 processor from Nvidia, a 10.1-inch 1280-by-600 resolution screen, 1 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage with a microSD card slot, front- and rear-facing cameras (2 megapixels and 5 megapixels, respectively), 1080p video playback, HDMI and USB ports and support for Verizon's 4G network.

An anonymous source tells Engadget that the Xoom will launch on February 17 priced at $700 at Best Buy.

Now, it's tempting to stack up the Xoom against Apple's iPad, and you can do this in a bunch of ways. Put the Xoom next to Apple's entry-level $500 iPad and Motorola looks like a failure. Compare it to the 3G-equipped, 32 GB iPad at $729 and the tables tilt in Motorola's favor.

But there are a few reasons to avoid these spec comparisons, at least for now:

My biggest concern with the Xoom is that we've barely seen it in action. The tablet was only running canned video demos on the show floor of CES, so it was impossible to see whether Android 3.0 is as slick as Google claims. A tablet is only as good as its software, and the performance of Android 3.0 on Motorola's Xoom will be more important than any spec.

Speaking of software, the iPad has more than 50,000 apps specifically for the tablet. The Xoom will have few, if any, at launch. While Apple had to start from scratch as well, it also had the only tablet-optimized operating system on the market for nearly a year. Developers will soon get to choose from Android, WebOS, and Blackberry Playbook, and I'm guessing that none will see the same early growth as the iPad.

That's not to say spec comparisons are completely worthless, but keep in mind that Apple will probably launch a second-generation iPad in a few months, rendering any current comparisons meaningless to anyone who isn't predisposed towards a single operating system.

Comparing specs is fun. It appeals to our geeky tendency to compartmentalize everything into tiny bits of logic -- and PC World has done its fair share -- but there's a reason Apple doesn't talk about specs in its iPad commercials: They just don't tell the whole story.
