BP, issues management and 150 million adverse internet citations

Shares are holding up well after BP and its partners were accused of a series of cost-cutting decisions that ultimately contributed to the oil spill that ravaged the Gulf of Mexico coast over the summer, the White House oil spill commission said on Wednesday.

What is coming out in the aftermath goes much wider than the loss of life, an unprecedented environment disaster, threat of being taken over and the loss of some top executives.

Over and again, we hear criticism of poor communication. BP might expect some criticism in PR Week but is now in the spotlight as a poor communicator in the Wall St Journal, Financial Times, and BBC and has been associated with poor communication over 30,000 times online in a week.

The Monthly report will be un-nerving with critical coverage in news sites (5,000 articles this month), blogs (50,000 posts), Twitter (11,000 times), Facebook (14,000 times) - yes they have all be there. This mountain of criticism is now online and will not go away any year soon. long after the beaches are pristine again, the online aftermath will be there.

I am not going to criticise whoever was the managerin-chargeof PR at BP (it could or perhaps should be among these people). I am going to offer a view of the two million online citations that have been generated in this last terrible year for the company.

Crisis management is about preparation and the PR industry does have some very good tools to help in this regard. Planning and managing for crisis is hard work but not hugely complicated (compared to other areas of PR management). BP did not have much of a crisis communication plan in place according to the US commission report.

Recovering from a crisis is much harder and often one crisis sparks another (death - oil spill - share price fall - top executives desert - takeover threat - pressure on otheroperations- cost of being inthe spotlight - legal costs/management disruption). The level of added distraction for the Board, cost and range of threats is now significant and for some organisations such pressures can be crippling.

What is to be done?

Well, after the PR crisis management plan has been put in place and the complete review of how BP and its industry moves towards improving transparency (oh no! not another TV series about the oilmen) and next shuffle of the Board, there will have to be achange of structure (retailseparatefrom exploration and production for example) name and identity.

Why change of name and identity? Basically BP has to find a way to escape from the mountain of adverse online content that will follow it round like a bad smell for years.

The question is what is the timing for all this.

German consumer sentiment on the rise: GfK (AFP)

FRANKFURT (AFP) ? German consumer sentiment pursued an upward trend in January, the GfK market research group said Tuesday, with shoppers' propensity to buy improving significantly in the biggest European economy.

Gfk said its household confidence index would rise to 5.7 points in February from a revised 5.5 points this month.

It had initially forecast a dip to 5.4 points in January, which would have been the first decline after six increases.

"The propensity to buy was a key factor in ensuring that the consumer climate returned to its upward trend in January following a short interruption," a GfK statement said.

The group added that "encouraging prospects for the employment market were responsible for economic expectations remaining at a high level at the start of this year."

Consumer's personal income expectations declined slightly however, as "price expectations have recently shown another slight increase on the back of rising energy and food prices in particular."

ING senior economist Carsten Brzeski said measures including lower tax benefits, cuts in parent's aid and higher social security contributions also gave consumers "a small foretaste of how austerity feels in their own pockets."

But strong economic fundamentals suggested they should nonetheless contribute to growth in 2011, providing "a second key pillar" for an economy that has often relied on exports, GfK said.

In its latest reading of German business sentiment released Friday, the Ifo economic research institute found that confidence began the year at a fresh all-time high.

Substantial drops in sub-indices for the wholesale and retail sectors had cast doubt however over whether the astonishing German recovery would spread to consumer spending.

But "with increasing wages, dropping unemployment and pent-up demand, private consumption should become an important growth driver this year," Brzeski said.

Prominent Theatre History Scholar Oscar Brockett Dies at 87

  • Leslie Lyon, Director of Public Affairs, College of Fine Arts, (512) 475-7033

Leslie Lyon, (512) 475-7033

In Memoriam

Theatre history scholar and University of Texas at Austin Professor Emeritus Oscar G. Brockett died on Nov. 7 in Austin, Texas, at the age of 87 due to complications following a massive stroke.

Brockett was a professor emeritus in The University of Texas at Austin's Department of Theatre and Dance and was head of the doctoral program in Theatre History from 1980 ? 1999. He was presented the College of Fine Arts E. William Doty Award in 1998 recognizing him as an individual of distinction in his field who has demonstrated extraordinary interest in the college.

Brockett was considered by many to be the world's foremost theatre historian. His book, ?History of the Theatre,? is the top-ranked and highest-selling theatre history text of the 20th century. His most recent scholarly contribution, ?Making the Scene: A History of Stage Design and Technology in Europe and the United States,? was published in 2010.

Following a rural upbringing on a Tennessee tobacco farm, Brockett earned his doctoral degree in theatre at Stanford University. He taught at Indiana University prior to joining The University of Texas at Austin in 1978 as dean of the College of Fine Arts. In 1980 he stepped down as dean to head the doctoral program in the Department of Theatre and Dance. He expanded the program from five students to 30, and within nine years made it the number one theatre history program in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report magazine.

?Say the name Oscar Brockett anywhere in the theatre world and everyone will instantly ascribe to him the title of the foremost historian of the theatre,? said Department of Theatre and Dance Chair Brant Pope. ?Oscar Brockett quite literally invented the study of theatre history. Before his work, we studied the history of the drama, but Dr. Brockett was the first and foremost man of the theatre to write about the relationship between the drama and the production of those works on the stage.?

?As was every student of the theatre in my generation, I was introduced to my chosen field by studying the works of Oscar Brockett. How incredibly fortunate I am that this man, who so shaped my understanding of what being a theatre artists means, was also my friend. As I write this, his greatest book, ?Century of Innovation,? sits on my desk. At this moment when we grieve his loss, it gives great comfort to think how many future students of the theatre will encounter Oscar Brockett in the ideas, and images, and imagination he poured into his work.?

A recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and Fulbright Award, Brockett was a Fellow of the American Theatre at the Kennedy Center and was awarded multiple Career Achievement Awards from groups like the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, the Texas Educational Theatre Association and the U.S. Institute for Theatre Technology.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Oscar G. Brockett Theatre Production Support Endowment in the Department of Theatre and Dance.

Contributions may be mailed to:

How &39;bout a government run health plan that is REQUIRED to charge the same rate as private insurance?

How'bout a government run health plan that is REQUIRED to charge the same rate as private insurance?
That would be fair competition.
That would make it so that corporations had no incentive to drop their current health plans.
That would be fair competition.
We do like fair competition, don't we? Maybe the government would have to charge 4% more than private plans.
Then corporations would have an incentive not to switch to the public plan.
Wouldn't that be a good idea?
The extra money could be used to subsidize those that cannot afford health insurance. Keep in mind, suppose you live in Canada.
And you want to purchase a Honda.
You can get one made in Japan, where there is universal health insurance.
Or you can get one made in the US, where the cost of worker insurance is tacked onto the price.
Which are you going to choose? If you want to make the US more competitive in the world market, then you should demand universal health insurance.
If you want US corporations to be more profitable, you should demand universal health insurance. If you want to live longer, then you should demand universal health insurance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_life_expectancy Notice that all of the major industrialized countries have longer life expectancies than the US.
EVERY SINGLE ONE.
That's what you should have a problem with.
If the country that has the best health care in the world, also has the shortest life expectancy, you should demand a change.
And that change is to move to universal health coverage. If not for you, do it for your kids.
Take an average. That's just high school math. "Maybe the government would have to charge 4% more than private plans. The extra money could be used to subsidize those that cannot afford health insurance." (maybe read the whole question?)It would actually serve a very good purpose. A very sad fact is that way too many Americans seem to think that "SALE" is a religious objective. If something is cheaper, that's better.
Consider, if preventive health care were required, health expenses would significantly decline. But we're not smart enough to do that. "Never pay today what you can put off until tomorrow." Even if it'll cost far more tomorrow. Other industrialized countries achieve longer life exectancies by spending wisely, not by spending more. They practice preventitive medicine. That's what the government plan would do. That's why some people would pay more -- to live longer, and more healthy. I would.
Answer :
Works for me.

Character Art Collection

One of my favorite resources for fleshing out a character is the vast wealth of portraiture found online. Art, photos? There are multiple ways to use such items to help you with a character. The two major ones are art to character, or character to art to character.

Art to character: In this case, you simply find a portrait that inspires you and create a character around it. Your character doesn?t have to ?accurately? reflect the portrait: for example, you might base a female character in a fantasy world around a painting of fairie queen, even though your character is wholly human. The important part is that some element of the image fires your imagination and helps to fill out any gaps in the character you?re creating. Clothing, hair, facial expression, body posture, gesture: all of these things can inspire character elements.

Character to art to character: In this case, you start with a character you?ve already begun. You then look for an image that suits that character. This can take quite some time (particularly with male characters?it tends to be much more difficult to find male portraiture), but can be very worthwhile. You might end up picking out one or more characters that are close to what you want but off in one or more details. Then, you reverse it: you see what additional inspiration you can take from any image(s) you?ve found, just as in the first option.

I created a DeviantArt account largely so that I could start collecting DA character portraiture in a convenient place. It occurred to me this morning that I should link to that collection so that anyone who comes across this might use it as well. So here you are: the ever-expanding collection of character images. Here?s one of my favorites:

RealPlayer

Editorial Review of RealPlayer

Venerable multimedia playback software RealPlayer is back. In the latest version, Real Networks has enhanced the player's mobile capabilities, taking aim at Android, BlackBerry, and Nokia phones that lack the native media syncing solution that Apple's iPhone and iPod enjoy with iTunes.

The new RealPlayer is ad-supported; you'll see and hear a video ad every time you launch the app. Luckily, the ads close automatically when you navigate away from the "Featured" tab. The real action takes place in the Now Playing, Library, and Burn tabs. When you navigate to the Library tab, you can have RealPlayer search your PC for media files (music, videos, pictures, downloads, recordings, and playlists).

Once you've added media files to your library, you can play them back, edit their info, create playlists, and more--all the tasks you'd expect from a multimedia manager app. You can use the Burn tab to create CDs or DVDs, and can print jewel cases for your discs. The Now Playing tab works just as you'd expect, letting you view the content that's currently playing.

Where the new RealPlayer differentiates itself is through its ability to help you manage your mobile devices. While the previous version of the app let you transfer files to your mobile device, the new RealPlayer works in the opposite direction too, adding the ability to transfer media files off of your mobile device and into your RealPlayer library. In my tests of the final version, this feature worked as promised.

When you connect your mobile device to your computer, RealPlayer recognizes it as a source of content, and asks you to identify the make and model. I tested RealPlayer with a Motorola Droid 2 smartphone, and was happy to see that this relatively new phone appeared as an option on Real's list; it didn't when I tested the RealPlayer beta a few months ago. You're asked to identify your mobile device in case you'd like to convert any of your PC files for viewing on the handset, and, I was able to convert files without a problem.

When your mobile device is connected, RealPlayer adds it to your library, where you can view its information in its own panel. The app identified the phone by name--another fix from the beta version, which identified my phone as J:\.

RealPlayer identifies any new media files on your connected device, and allows you to transfer them to your PC. This process worked seamlessly in my tests, and provided one of the easiest ways of managing an Android phone that I've experienced. In addition, you can sync playlists and can transfer files to your mobile device--now by just dragging and dropping the file to your phone. If the file isn't compatible with your device, RealPlayer gives you the option of converting and then syncing it.

You can use the new RealPlayer with an iPhone or an iPod, but the experience isn't the same. Your iPhone or iPod will not show up in your Library as a connected device, but you will be able to convert copy files to the iPhone. The app also lets you add them right to your iTunes library. Still, the new RealPlayer is not a true media management solution for Apple devices; iTunes itself is better for that.

The new RealPlayer retains the features found in previous versions that let you upload files directly to sites like Facebook and YouTube. You also can download video files from Web sites directly to your RealPlayer library. These are all nice touches, but not enough to make RealPlayer a must-have. But if you own an Android, BlackBerry, or Nokia phone, and have been looking for a free and easy way to manage its multimedia files, the new RealPlayer will make your life a whole lot easier.

Note: This link takes you to the vendor's site, where you can download the latest version of the software.

Eset NOD32 Antivirus 4

Eset NOD32 Antivirus ($72 for 1 year, 3 PCs as of 12/22/2010) finishes ninth in our roundup of 2011 antivirus software. It does a reasonable job at blocking brand new attacks and it's fast, but it has trouble detecting known malware and cleaning up infections, which makes it tough to recommend.

NOD32's main interface isn't too badly designed, but it's limited in what it displays--even in "advanced mode." Where things get messy, though, is in the settings interface. Here, you'll have access to a limited set of features to adjust--unless you turn on Advanced Mode. In Advanced Mode, the settings box turns into a dizzying array of checkboxes and drop-downs, all in a less-than-optimally-designed window.

Things weren't much better when it came to detection: NOD32 detected 89.2 percent of known malware samples, which is the lowest, by far, of the products we looked at. By comparison, the average for antivirus software that we looked at was 96.2 percent, and top performers achieved over-99-percent detection ratings. Eset also lagged behind in cleaning up infections: It was able to detect all infections on our test PC, but it was able to remove all active components only 60 percent of the time, and it removed all traces of malware only 10 percent of the time. Both scores were the lowest in this test, and well behind the pack.

That said, Eset did an acceptable job at blocking brand new malware--it fully blocked 84 percent of brand new malware attacks in our "real world" testing--a decent showing, but not outstanding. Eset also had up a low false-positive rate--it flagged only one good file as suspicious.

Eset shined in system speed tests. When we triggered a scan, Eset was the fastest among the products we tested--it tore through 4.5GB of files in a mere 90 seconds. Its on-access scanner--which kicks in when files are opened or saved to disk--was also very fast, completing a scan of 4.5GB of files in 4 minutes even, an above-average result. And its overall impact on system performance was the smallest among the antivirus packages we tested.

That speed is good, but all the speed in the world doesn't mean much if a security product doesn't effectively stop malware. And given NOD32's struggles, we can't give it our recommendation.

Lyrics Tattoos

tattoo designs

Everyone has at least one favorite song. This song speaks to you, describes you and your life perfectly, has kept you emotionally centered, and generally happy. For some people, this one perfect song has meant the world to them, and they decide to keep that amazing music with them forever. Lyrics tattoos may not be exceptionally common, but for those who get them, they are just as important as the music itself.

The majority of lyrics tattoos feature lyrics in a flowing cursive style; however, you can use a variety of different fonts, depending on where you place them on your body. Many people like to use the full lyrical text, and so you may want to use a finer, smoother font if you choose to place the words on a smaller area such as an arm or a leg. One alternative to this would be to place different parts of the song on different areas of the body. For example, you could place the chorus on one arm, a verse on the other, the refrain on the chest, and any further verses on the lower stomach. If you would prefer to use a bolder font on a small area of the body, you might also have the options of using only a specific part of the lyrics; only using the chorus once, or wrapping the words tightly around the body part.

Symbols and images can also be utilized to enhance lyrics tattoos. Some people may choose to underline important phrases with vines, or border the body of the text with flowers, stars, or chains. Candles may be placed under or above the text to ?illuminate? the words, or they may be given the appearance of being burnt or etched into the skin. Some people like their lyrics tattoos to follow a theme; this is especially true for more modern music where the musician may use very distinctive art for their albums, or may have an identifiable band logo. For more classical lyrics, you may also include a portrait of the artist behind or next to the lyrics. One unusual idea would be to place certain lyrics within the eyes and mouth of the pictured musician. Other musical paraphernalia is also used in this style. You may see lyrics placed on guitars or drums, or you may see them placed above musical notes that fit with the words.

Music speaks to us, and there is no better way to express your passion for it than with lyrics tattoos.

Equality Act 2010

This Act, 251 pages long, is intended to harmonise and, in some cases extend, discrimination laws on the 'protected characteristics' of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation. It also provides for ministers to amend UK regulation to bring it into line with EU law, for changes to tribunal procedures, a public sector duty to promote equalities, duties on employers and enforcement.

It involves not only the duty of equality to employees, but also in service delivery to patients.

3TB Hard Drives Coming, but You?ll need a new Computer

Hard drive manufacturer Seagate has confirmed to UK website Thinq that 3TB hard drives are definitely on the plan for 2010.

3TB hard drives The only problem? If you?re using a 32-bit version of a Windows operating system (which is ? most people), you may end up seeing as little as 990MB of that huge storage capacity because of limitations to the Logical Block Addressing (LBA) measures used to access the space. Current PC standard for LBA cannot address more than 2.1TB of storage in a single drive.

The limitation appears set to become the "Y2K problem" for hard drives with the limitation of the LBA system setup by Microsoft and IBM back in 1980. Apparently, no-one expected anyone to need more than 2.1TB of storage.

Seagate product manager Barbara Craig told Thinq support for Long LBA is required for both hardware and software to handle the new drives which limits operating system support to 64-bit Windows 7 and Vista plus modified versions of Linux. The new 3TB drive won?t work with Windows XP at all.

The problem with hardware is more difficult to fix.

Drives of greater than 2.1TB will also require a GUID Partition Table ? a system implemented in Apple computers ? because the old Master Boot Record (MBR) method of noting storage particulars again can?t work with drives greater than 2.1TB. Intel announced last year that it was looking to improve the old DOS-look BIOS system with EFI ? Extensible Firmware Interface.

However, very few PC motherboards currently support EFI and that pretty much knocks things on the head right there in terms of upgrading.

So if you?re thinking about turning your PC into a storage farm, chances are you?re going to need to start from scratch with a new PC to go with it.

Nvidia Prepping for 3D Mobile Revolution

Get ready for a deluge of 3D-capable mobile devices in 2011 including smartphones, tablets and netbooks, if the latest rumors are correct. Nvidia is reportedly planning an upgraded version of its Tegra 2 processor specifically targeted for mobile devices with 3D displays. Nvidia plans to announce its upgraded system-on-chip in February during a company presentation at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, according to TechEye.

Click to Zoom: Image Credit Tech EyeA leaked slide purportedly from Nvidia's MWC presentation shows the 3D-focused chip will be based on a dual core ARM Cortex A9 processor with speeds up to 1.2GHz. The rumored Tegra 2.5 would go into production before the end of March and be released by the spring. Nvidia's current version of the Tegra 2, announced in January 2010, features a dual core ARM Cortex A9 with speeds up to 1 GHz.

3D Mobile Deluge?

Just like every other part of the tech industry, 3D is the hot trend for mobile devices. Sharp in November announced two Android-based smartphones with 3D-capable displays, and Nintendo has been making a lot of waves with the impending release of its glasses-free Nintendo 3DS on March 27.

It's not clear what kind of devices the rumored Tegra 2.5 would appear in first, but the assumption is that a deluge of 3D-capable smartphones, tablets, and netbooks could be here by the summer.

Chrome OS?

Engadget unearthed an interesting tidbit of chatter going on in the Chromium OS message boards. It appears the open source code monkeys working on Chromium OS have been busy adding 1.25 GHz clock support for something called the T25 from Nvidia.

Now, I'm not going to jump ahead and suggest a 3D-capable Chrome OS netbook is in the works, but this little tidbit does lend credence to the rumor that a Tegra 2.5 running at 1.2GHz is coming soon.

Like it or not, the 3D mobile revolution appears to be on the horizon. The question is will there be compelling content to make a 3D mobile display worth using?
