The DB2 adapter now supports Django 1.1

I?m glad to announce that the API team has just released version 1.0.2 of the adapter for Django. And on my birthday to boot, what a nice present. This version extends its support to the recently released Django 1.1, as well as incorporating the feedback that was received earlier on. :) (For installation instructions, take a look at the README file.)

IBM confirms its commitment to support Python and Django, and gives Django well deserved credentials in environments where having IBM?s support counts. Django is becoming an increasingly mature web framework with the potential to do well within the Enterprise world. Having support for DB2 will surely help.

The next step will be working with the Django team to bake DB2 support directly into Django?s releases. The code for the adapter is released under a liberal OSI-compliant license that is compatible with Django?s own BSD, and the API team is more than willing to work on the development and support of the adapter should it become part of Django. We love Django and ponies. Let?s make this happen, guys.

Will the New MacBook Pros be Decent Gaming PCs?

macbook_pro_july_2007.jpg

The word on the street is that Apple's new high-end MacBook Pro is set to ship with an NVIDIA 9600M GT, arguably the most underwhelming GPU upgrade to Apple's "pro" part in years. Don't quote me on that, but the rumor sites have long speculated that the MacBook Pro, which currently uses NVIDIA's 8600M GT mobile GPU, would transition to the shave-and-a-haircut 9600M GT -- effectively an up-clocked 8600M GT built on a smaller nanometer process -- experiencing the sort of modest performance leap that flatters even single digit percentages.

Why so hard on the 9600M GT? Because there's simply nothing exciting about it. Same number of vertex/pixel shaders as the 8600M GT, same poky 128-bit memory bus, slightly faster clocks, slightly cooler due to its smaller manufacturing process -- a benefit obviously neutralized by its running at said slightly higher clocks.

Let's get one thing straight before I continue slapping the 9600M around: I'm talking about the MacBook Pro here, not the new MacBook. You want the scoop on the MacBook with its rumored Intel-GMA-killing integrated NVIDIA GPU? Have a look at Peter Cohen's "Will the next MacBooks be better gaming systems?"

Okay. Let's have a look at some actual numbers, here compiled by Notebookcheck, a kind of mobile GPU data cube you can slice and dice to find rough analogues between parts, one that offers a crude but durable means of getting a ballpark feel for performance metrics. All detail settings in F.E.A.R. and Doom 3 were cranked to maximum here, and the MacBook Pro's numbers were pulled out of Boot Camp.

MacBook Pro 15" (Intel 2.4GHz T7700, 8600M GT w/512MB)

F.E.A.R. - 37 fps
Doom 3 - 86.5 fps
3DMark 06 - 3900

HP Pavilion dv7-1050eg (Intel 2.53GHz T9400, 9600M GT w/512MB)

F.E.A.R. - 40 fps
Doom 3 - 85 fps
3DMark 06 - 4419

Like I said, great big lung-sucking mouthful of yawn, if in fact I and pretty much everyone else in rumor-ville haven't missed the boat (the dock, the entire body of water) on the 9600M as discrete heir apparent in the high-end Pro parts.

Now you can throw a faster Intel processor into the mix for a sliver of an uptick, argue for a frame here and there out of an integrated NVIDIA mainboard chipset (PC Perspective's Ryan Shrout thinks it's NVIDIA's MCP79), you can boost the memory to 3 or 4 GB, you can tuck a zippy 7200 RPM hard drive in, but in the end, you're still talking performance crumbs that frankly wouldn't feed a mouse, if, say, that mouse was a mainstream/enthusiast gamer.

Of course I realize there's a certain contingent of you who buy the MacBook Pro, then go back a year or two to play all the stuff you haven't yet. Fair enough. There's certainly a galaxy of older PC games out there that run swell as can be on today's MacBook Pros, not a dropped frame or stutter in sight. What's more, lots of you are increasingly looking from your PCs (laptops, desktops, whatever) then over at your Xbox 360s or PS3s and saying "Heck with it, I'll just buy the console version."

But let's talk here and now for a second. What you're not seeing from numbers like the ones above, is anything relevant to what you might want to play on a MacBook Pro in Boot Camp mode today or down the road a bit. Namely: Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, Red Alert 3, and Grand Theft Auto IV. Oh, Crysis runs...if you're willing to gag every detail on "low" and drop the resolution (blurry interpolation, hooray!) and, you know, basically eradicate one of the most compelling reasons to play the game at all. Crysis has been out nearly a year now, and while I wouldn't expect an Apple part to jump up and become the definitive experience for that sort of edge-bleeder, I'm well within the bounds of reason to expect a little more intrepidness out of a GPU update to a part we've been living with since July 2007.

There's simply no way to get around the 9600M GT's lackluster numbers without dropping a faster GPU into the matrix. Which GPU? Why not an NVIDIA 9800M GT, which actually shifts the architecture in a manner becoming of a part dubbed "pro"? The 9800M GT has 96 pixel and vertex shaders (versus the 8600's 32) and in a T9400 Intel Core 2 Duo turns in a much more robust 3DMark 06 score of 9228, not to mention a F.E.A.R. score of 118 frames per second.

When it comes to sugar and spice and everything nice, Apple has my vote neatly wrapped and ribboned. I love working in OS X and mostly dig the MacBook Pro's physical layout. But as a mainstream gaming machine... Let's put it this way: If the 9600M GT really is the anointed part and the benchmark differences after everything's said and accounted for look roughly like the ones above, I'm probably through with the MacBook Pro. It'll be down to a MacBook or MacBook Air for me, and back to dedicated PC hardware for PC gaming.

RealPlayer

Editorial Review of RealPlayer

Venerable multimedia playback software RealPlayer is back. In the latest version, Real Networks has enhanced the player's mobile capabilities, taking aim at Android, BlackBerry, and Nokia phones that lack the native media syncing solution that Apple's iPhone and iPod enjoy with iTunes.

The new RealPlayer is ad-supported; you'll see and hear a video ad every time you launch the app. Luckily, the ads close automatically when you navigate away from the "Featured" tab. The real action takes place in the Now Playing, Library, and Burn tabs. When you navigate to the Library tab, you can have RealPlayer search your PC for media files (music, videos, pictures, downloads, recordings, and playlists).

Once you've added media files to your library, you can play them back, edit their info, create playlists, and more--all the tasks you'd expect from a multimedia manager app. You can use the Burn tab to create CDs or DVDs, and can print jewel cases for your discs. The Now Playing tab works just as you'd expect, letting you view the content that's currently playing.

Where the new RealPlayer differentiates itself is through its ability to help you manage your mobile devices. While the previous version of the app let you transfer files to your mobile device, the new RealPlayer works in the opposite direction too, adding the ability to transfer media files off of your mobile device and into your RealPlayer library. In my tests of the final version, this feature worked as promised.

When you connect your mobile device to your computer, RealPlayer recognizes it as a source of content, and asks you to identify the make and model. I tested RealPlayer with a Motorola Droid 2 smartphone, and was happy to see that this relatively new phone appeared as an option on Real's list; it didn't when I tested the RealPlayer beta a few months ago. You're asked to identify your mobile device in case you'd like to convert any of your PC files for viewing on the handset, and, I was able to convert files without a problem.

When your mobile device is connected, RealPlayer adds it to your library, where you can view its information in its own panel. The app identified the phone by name--another fix from the beta version, which identified my phone as J:\.

RealPlayer identifies any new media files on your connected device, and allows you to transfer them to your PC. This process worked seamlessly in my tests, and provided one of the easiest ways of managing an Android phone that I've experienced. In addition, you can sync playlists and can transfer files to your mobile device--now by just dragging and dropping the file to your phone. If the file isn't compatible with your device, RealPlayer gives you the option of converting and then syncing it.

You can use the new RealPlayer with an iPhone or an iPod, but the experience isn't the same. Your iPhone or iPod will not show up in your Library as a connected device, but you will be able to convert copy files to the iPhone. The app also lets you add them right to your iTunes library. Still, the new RealPlayer is not a true media management solution for Apple devices; iTunes itself is better for that.

The new RealPlayer retains the features found in previous versions that let you upload files directly to sites like Facebook and YouTube. You also can download video files from Web sites directly to your RealPlayer library. These are all nice touches, but not enough to make RealPlayer a must-have. But if you own an Android, BlackBerry, or Nokia phone, and have been looking for a free and easy way to manage its multimedia files, the new RealPlayer will make your life a whole lot easier.

Note: This link takes you to the vendor's site, where you can download the latest version of the software.

Is This the Beginning of the End For Web Mail?

The number of people accessing Web-based e-mail sites such as Hotmail and Gmail is in decline, according to new research from ComScore. Comparing November 2010 to 2009, the research firm found six percent fewer visitors arrived at webmail sites. Not only that but those who visited spent just under 10 percent less time there compared to previous years.

Could the Web mail cloud be dissipating as quickly as it formed? Perhaps not, but the signs are not good for those who've been enjoying the high-quality free services offered by corporates such as Google and Microsoft. As usage patterns change, the tech giants are going to try harder and harder to squeeze money out of us.

The visitor drop was even steeper for teenage users between 12 and 17 years old; 24 percent fewer of them visited in November 2010 compared with the same time the previous year. Their engagement figure--the amount of time spent on the site measured in minutes and pages visited--dropped by half.

Teens give a clue as to what might be partially to blame: Messaging services built into social networking sites. Teens spend so long on Facebook that it becomes an "Internet shell" and they rarely wander beyond its walls. Switching to a different site just to send a message is cumbersome. Facebook's mail service isn't perfect but it's good enough for light use (although things are set to improve).

For groups usually excluded from social networking because of their age, Web e-mail showed the kind of growth that we might otherwise have expected: Of those aged over age 55, there was a rise of 16 percent in terms of visitors compared with 2009. Of those aged over 65, there was an 8 percent rise.

The biggest threat comes from mobile devices, however. The survey recorded 36 percent growth in mobile device e-mail access. However, it isn't clear how the e-mail is being delivered--whether push services or simple POP3 was in use, for example, or even if the mobile sites for Web mail services were being utilized.

However, the executive summary is this: Things are changing in the world of e-mail, and we could be in for the biggest shakeup since the launch of Web mail itself, back in 1996 when Hotmail came online. The decline in visitors to Web-based e-mail sites won't have gone unnoticed.

Users may not come out of it well. At the moment we get an astonishing amount for nothing. Gmail offers ad-free messages, POP3/IMAP access so e-mail can be grabbed via any e-mail client, insane amounts of storage, plus various bells and whistles that make using it a dream.

As users, all that's required of us is to gaze incidentally at ads here and there, and sometimes click them if we find them interesting. Whether Gmail (or Hotmail for that matter) actually makes any money this way is a moot point. We're still in the hazy, crazy days of the Internet's teenage years; don't kill the buzz by asking questions!

Yet it's important at least to try and make money, which is why there are ads. However, if people aren't seeing them because they're using every other method of grabbing mail rather than the Website, then this might make somebody at the increasingly bureaucratic Google start to panic.

People who panic do silly things, and we can imagine what could happen: Ads in messages, limitations on the number messages downloaded via POP3/IMAP, "upgrade" fees for additional functionality, and so on. Microsoft would be doing that kind of thing right now with Hotmail if it wasn't for Google providing competition.

The big problem looming on the horizon is that mobile technology is very resistant to advertising.

A small screen size makes it unforgivable to slip a banner in here or there, for example. Pop-up ads are impossible. The only route would be intrusive ads that users tend to hate--gateway ads that have to be cleared before the user progresses to the content, for example, or adding advertising to content without the user's permission.

No doubt Facebook will be giggling with glee at such attempts, having tied its own forthcoming messaging service into a larger product that offers all kinds of additional value points and already has an unobtrusive ad system in place. Indeed, as the likes of Google Wave have proven, the way forward may be to extend e-mail beyond mere messages. Yet Google has had little success.

ComScore is quick to point out in its survey that e-mail is still one of the most popular online services, reaching 70 percent of the US population each month. There's certainly an undying thirst out there for e-mail, but how the IT giants satiate our desires is set to change as time goes on.

German consumer sentiment on the rise: GfK (AFP)

FRANKFURT (AFP) ? German consumer sentiment pursued an upward trend in January, the GfK market research group said Tuesday, with shoppers' propensity to buy improving significantly in the biggest European economy.

Gfk said its household confidence index would rise to 5.7 points in February from a revised 5.5 points this month.

It had initially forecast a dip to 5.4 points in January, which would have been the first decline after six increases.

"The propensity to buy was a key factor in ensuring that the consumer climate returned to its upward trend in January following a short interruption," a GfK statement said.

The group added that "encouraging prospects for the employment market were responsible for economic expectations remaining at a high level at the start of this year."

Consumer's personal income expectations declined slightly however, as "price expectations have recently shown another slight increase on the back of rising energy and food prices in particular."

ING senior economist Carsten Brzeski said measures including lower tax benefits, cuts in parent's aid and higher social security contributions also gave consumers "a small foretaste of how austerity feels in their own pockets."

But strong economic fundamentals suggested they should nonetheless contribute to growth in 2011, providing "a second key pillar" for an economy that has often relied on exports, GfK said.

In its latest reading of German business sentiment released Friday, the Ifo economic research institute found that confidence began the year at a fresh all-time high.

Substantial drops in sub-indices for the wholesale and retail sectors had cast doubt however over whether the astonishing German recovery would spread to consumer spending.

But "with increasing wages, dropping unemployment and pent-up demand, private consumption should become an important growth driver this year," Brzeski said.

Mad Skills Motocross for IPhone

Tired of casual games? Think there's nothing challenging on the App Store? Think again. In Turborilla's Mad Skills Motocross for the iPhone, you control a dirt bike racer as he competes against a computer challenger in a series of racing competitions. Though the game presents you with a wide variety of tracks to compete on, the skills required to succeed are laser-like in their focus. That's the good and bad news.

Mad Skills comes with 52 2D side-scrolling races for you to compete in. Your main objective in most races is simply to win. When you start levels, you see two motorcyclists lined up along a start line, getting ready to race. A typical level track has several sand dunes, mud piles, or large hills that your rider has to conquer. Often, after your rider jumps over an obstacle, he'll be in midair. If your rider is in midair, you can press the Down arrow to make him perform a back flip. If he fails to complete the flip, and his bike starts to fall backwards, you can tap the Up arrow to level his bike and make him land safely. You can press either the Up or Down arrows at anytime during a race to adjust your rider's physical position on his bike. Your rider's position affects his aerodynamics, which affects the speed at which his bike moves.

Though most Mad Skills levels are pure races, where your only goal in them is to make your rider win, some game missions are different. To complete one level, you have to make your rider perform multiple back flips within a certain time span. In another, you must make your rider complete a course in 15 seconds or less. In another, your rider has to perform a specialized jump repeatedly.

I found that Mad Skill's tracks differentiate enough from each other so no level feels the same. The game's track differentiation is its biggest asset. Unfortunately, it's just too hard to keep your rider on his bike while racing. When I played the game, I placed my rider in many different positions to stabilize him. However, no matter the position, or the race, I could never keep him on his bike.

My rider's clumsiness wouldn't have been problem, if he hadn't had to compete against a computer challenge. My challenger never fell. He never decelerated. He never had any trouble getting up track hills. When my rider was struggling to get up from his falls, my computer opponent always managed to get much further ahead of him. After falls, I often exerted a lot of effort trying to get my rider to catch up with his challenger, but to no avail. Obviously, I replayed game levels a lot.

It's not impossible to beat Mad Skills Motocross levels. You just have to replay them over and over again until you learn to how keep your rider stable in them. Most gamers won't have the patience to repeat levels as much as the game requires you to do--I know I didn't. Still, if you're looking for a challenge, and I mean a real challenge, Mad Skills Motocross may be exactly the masochistic fun you've been looking for.

Finds by Julie Completes Two Major Renovations, Designing Modern Technology Behind Old World Charm

Finds by Julie, Boston based lifestyle enhancement firm, interior designers, part of International Antiques Network completes two major renovation projects combining the best of new technology with classic, old world antique charm.

PR9.NET July 21, 2010 - Boston, MA - Is it possible to preserve old world charm while adding modern, high tech comfort and efficiency? Boston based antiques, interior design and lifestyle enhancement firm, Finds by Julie, a subsidiary of International Antiques Network LLC (IAN), are world class specialists, a creative force bringing their clients the best of both worlds. Two major projects recently completed clearly demonstrate this talent.

Julie and Craig Hawley, co-founders of Finds by Julie and executive board members of International Antiques Network, working with their hand-picked team which includes five designers, three general contractors, and some 25 subcontractors, a Bang & Olufson rep and two fabric houses in London, brought their combined talents to bear in two major renovations completed in the last nine months.

The first was a total, five-floor renovation of a 200 year-old Beacon Hill, Boston brownstone, a two-family unit which they converted back into a single family home, restored to all of its former splendor, with some very modern touches. This was a 15-month project which included replacing all the HVAC in walls made of 200 year-old horsehair plaster. They put in three new baths, a first floor powder room that looks more like a grotto than a powder room, with an 18th century lavabo, a vessel sink made from a 200 year-old copper bowl with a gargoyle for a faucet head, and wallpaper made from crocodile skin. They assembled a French country kitchen suite facing a secret walled-in garden complete with herbs, flowers and a romantic French tabletop fire pit gazing off to an 18th century lavabo wall fountain; they brought back ceiling medallions from Venice, violins from London and a piano from Prague. They installed a built-in, lighted display cabinet for an exquisite Royal Crown Derby collection in the second floor dining room. For much of the furniture to be moved in, walls had to be removed and then replaced. Furniture was craned in through the windows and over the roof, and the city street had to be closed for twelve hours while this was going on. The ultra modern comforts and high technology included B&O equipment throughout, two new offices fully equipped, a biometric fingerprint reader front door access system, flat-screen TVs disguised as mirrors over the fireplace among others. The result is a beautiful home with its original, early 19th century charm concealing all the convenience and luxury that the 21st century can provide.

Their client was delighted: "Finds by Julie is a gem. With a sense of style that takes that of Bunny Williams to the next level, Julie transformed our home into an elegant, but highly livable oasis! Such attention to detail in every way. Julie's forte is understanding how people want to live and then creating and styling what I would call lifestyle vignettes around those preferences. She has a keen eye for taking the unusual artifact and making it into its own statement. The result is a home that is unique, warm, welcoming and wonderful!"

The other major renovation project was a three-month facelift of a Marblehead beach house, including a new roof, new windows, new paint throughout, darker ceilings and lighter walls, a gentleman's office with a Hemingway feel to it, in dark colors played off rattans and palm trees, replete with nautical art an office where anyone would love to sit and write. More furniture was chosen to supplement the great furniture already in the house, and new artwork found for all the walls. The result? The owner now prefers to spend the summer there and drive the 45 minutes into the city.

Not all of the projects undertaken by Finds by Julie are of such major scope. They specialize in remodeling kitchens (by Julie, for whom the whole adventure began in the kitchen) and offices (by Craig, who works hard to combine modern, high tech office equipment with the beautiful furniture and trappings of times gone by). Both trained by the Ritz Carlton LLC and schooled in butlering, they offer their clients a white glove service, managing the team behind the scenes, treating the client, and the vendors and subcontractors with respect, transparency and truth.

Finds by Julie delights in creating "the home that gives back." An eye for amazing, cool finds from earlier times, a space to set them in, a combination which is elegant, comfortable, relaxing and which enhances the lifestyle of the occupant. And their motto? "Don't just dream do!"

Bonus CineFiles: Family jewels, Irish tools and Indonesian cool!

Most weeks, I review more DVDs than the Indy can fit into print. You can look for extra write-ups here, on the IndyBlog.

Gene Simmons Family Jewels: The Complete Seasons 4 and 5 (NR)
A&E

While it is marketed as such, KISS frontman Gene Simmons' ?reality? show is anything but; this is as fraudulent and staged as your favorite network sitcom, minus the irritating laugh track. That being said, Family Jewels is one of the best sitcoms on TV, thanks to the completely likable cast of characters: Gene, the hapless dad; Shannon, the wise-cracking mom; Nick, the charmingly awkward son and Sophie, the upbeat daughter. In Season 4, the gang has a Sweet 16 party, plays the blues in Memphis, dons firefighting gear, trains for roller-derby and adopts a new puppy. Meanwhile, Season 5 starts off with Gene on tour and Shannon with (possibly) cancer, but, of course, things get back to goofy when Gene celebrates his 60th and gets involved with alligators, and goes to Comic-Con to pimp Nick's book. Cirque du Soleil even makes a creepy appearance. Purely disposable entertainment, to be sure, but it's purely disposable entertainment at its best.

Turning Green (R)
Image Entertainment

If you were to judge Turning Green by cover alone, you'd think you were in store for a brutal Boondock Saints rip-off. Upon viewing, however, we're treated to a quirky coming-of-age comedy that merely happens to feature crime in the slightest, most pervy of ways. Teenage American James is forced to move with his brother to Ireland after the death of his mother. While most of us would think that's awesome, he hates it and can't wait to get back to the ghettos of Boston. He spends most of his time masturbating and doing stupid bar tricks for quick cash, but when an opportunity to earn more arises via the local bookie, he jumps in and starts to kinda sorta learn the trade. And what does he do with it? He buys porno mags from London and creates a spank-book black market of sorts, and now the bookie wants his cut. So I guess it's more like the Poon-dock Saints, am I right?

Merantau (R)
Magnolia Home Entertainment

I've done my best here with CineFiles to highlight the best of the Thai action film boom, but, as that trend starts to wane, it's becoming pretty clear that the Indonesians are coming out of nowhere, delivering a brutal leg-sweep like the impetuous young Turks that they are to take the martial arts movie throne. First up is the exciting Merantau. Sure, the plot ? a young country boy heads to the big city to find himself, but only finds trouble from the local gangsters ? is a retread, especially of the Tony Jaa flick Ong-Bak, but you didn't come here for plot! You came for pure foot-to-face fight choreography, which it delivers in spades. Highlighting the very fluid Indonesian martial art of Silat, or, more specifically, Silat Harimau, Marentau may not become a classic, but it's definitely a hell of a start and should pique the interest of American action fans immediately.

Remains of the Day: Hello, is your iTunes running?

Let?s start the week off right with a white iPhone sighting, an Apple commercial?s debut, and a whole new meaning for ?Google TV.? That and more in the remainders for Monday, January 24, 2010.

White iPhone 4 appears in AT&T?s online system (Boy Genius Report)

Boy Genius Report says that AT&T?s online account management system is now showing entries for 16GB and 32GB white iPhone 4s. (Apple?s latest word on the ivory phones? arrival pegged themfor spring 2011.) And here I was despondent that speculation was dead in the wake of the Verizon iPhone announcement.

New AT&T Verizon iPhone 4 Commercial (YouTube)

Speaking of the fast-approaching Bizarro iPhone, here?s Apple?s first commercial showing off the Verizon and AT&T iPhones side-by-side. I hope they?re not totally identical, or else we?re going to be really sad when we can?t make calls from our Verizon phone either.

$10K iTunes Winner Hung Up On Apple, Thought It Was a Prank [Exclusive] (Cult of Mac)

On the topic of interrupted phone calls, the woman who downloaded the ten billionth app from the App Store actually hung up when a representative from Apple called to congratulate her. Gail Davis thought it was a prank call, so she told the rep she wasn?t interested. Fortunately, the matter was eventually resolved and she received her $10,000 iTunes gift card. On the downside, poor Ms. Davis is probably now going to be second-guessing every e-mail she gets from a deposed Nigerian prince.

Exclusive: Apple Taps Former Navy Information Warrior for Global Director of Security (All Things Digital)

According to All Things Digital?s Arik Hesseldahl, Apple has hired security expert David Rice to be its global director of security. Previously, Rice worked as a Special Duty Cryptologic officer in the U.S. Navy and an analyst at the National Security Agency. So I guess it remains to be seen how he?ll do in a truly secretive environment.

Google?s Schmidt eyeing TV (New York Post)

And now for an Eric Schmidt chaser. The Google CEO, who last week announced his intention to step down from the role, has reportedly been talking with a CNN producer about hosting a show on the network. Allow me to share my short list of potential titles for the program:

Eric Schmidt, Ph.D.
Street View with Eric Schmidt
Eric Schmidt 360, 24/7, 365, Live, Outside Your House Right Now
Creepy Time with Eric Schmidt
Schmidt My Dad Says

I think we have a winner.

Thai Lawyers' Ideas on Dealing With Virtual Crime in the Real World

(1888PressRelease) November 26, 2010 - Bangkok, Thailand - Thailand corporate legal service BSA Law are pushing for a new system of Thai laws to help make cyber criminals far more accountable for their actions, saying that the internet has been largely 'lawless' to date.

BSA Law believes a range of measures working with current Thai law will help make cyber criminals more accountable, including:
- Utilization of the IMPACT service (International Multilateral Partnership Against Cyber Threats), which provides training and liaison services to help countries work together to prosecute cyber criminals
- Harmonization of cyber laws across borders
- Training for Thai police in digital forensic techniques. Increasing, scientific evidence is needed for judges to prosecute those accused of cyber crime.
- Establishment of a national response team for cyber-incidents, so that there is an expert single point of contact for liaison with other countries.

Thailand is a member of the United Nations International Telecommunications Union, a body which works closely with global computer security.

Apisakde Kongkangwanchoke, senior partner at BSA Law, believes that efforts to regulate online activity to date have largely failed. "There are vital legal issues of jurisdiction at the heart of the problem, which have hamstrung many efforts to update Thai law for the cyber age so far," Mr. Kongkangwanchoke said.

"We would like to see a far more concerted effort towards resolving these issues. It isn't acceptable to have a platform on which many of us spend most of our lives, to be such a lawless arena," Mr. Kongkangwanchoke finished.

About BSA Law:

For nearly 30 years, Bamrung Suvicha Apisakdi Law Associates (BSA Law) has focused on providing reliable legal advice and services to the Thai and foreign business community in Thailand. BSA Law seeks to provide international standards of legal services while retaining the customs of the Thai business culture.

At the End of the Right Wing Rainbow

During President Obama's major health care speech on Wednesday, South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson (R) yelled out "You lie!" when President Obama said the legislation would not mandate coverage for undocumented immigrants.

This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President's remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President's statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility.

What else would you expect from an ignorant lying right wing nut job redneck congressman from South Carolina, who couldn't control his hatred and rage during Obama's speech to a joint session of Congress in the House of Representatives.

Even though he was the one that lied about the proposal, he fails to admit it in his apology.

The non-partisan organization FactCheck.org has debunked the claim that health care reform would mandate coverage for illegal immigrants.

False: Illegal Immigrants Will Be Covered

One Republican congressman issued a press release claiming that "5,600,000 Illegal Aliens May Be Covered Under Obamacare," and we?ve been peppered with queries about similar claims. They?re not true. In fact, the House bill (the only bill to be formally introduced in its entirety) specifically says that no federal money would be spent on giving illegal immigrants health coverage:
H.R. 3200: Sec 246 ? NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS
Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.
Also, under current law, those in the country illegally don?t qualify for federal health programs. Of interest: About half of illegal immigrants have health insurance now, according to the nonpartisan Pew Hispanic Center, which says those who lack insurance do so principally because their employers don?t offer it.
"Misleading GOP Health Care Claims" July 23

It is very obvious to me how the right wing politicians avoided the real issues and challenges that have to be addressed in order to overcome the problems to put health care in order. Instead they have chosen once again to insult the collective intelligence of we the people.

They did this by misinforming the people with bullshit. Saying that health reform would be the start of Death panels, federally funded abortion, forced sex change operations, insuring illegals, rationed health care, government takeover of all health care, socialism, communism just to name a few.

Instead of stepping up and helping to solve health care problems they (the right) made up propaganda to instill once again the only thing they know anything about, "fear" into the people that really didn't take that much to make them believers of this nonsense, they already hate the left and Obama to begin with and they picked on the elderly for the obvious reasons, they are the easiest to upset and to scare.

Tort reform which is a republican idea, in my mind is a good tool to help lower health care. I also think that cross state buying of insurance is another good right wing idea. Congress has included 161 other republican amendments in the package I don't know them all, are to be part of this bill.

It is time to change health care, it is time to care about the families being devastated by health issues, this is not the time for our representatives to be worried about insurance company profits. It is time for both parties to stop taking money from big Insurance and Pharma.

It is our time to be represented by the people we elected to help us. Or else we will all end up in that dirty little shit house at the end of the rainbow.

Gmail Tips: 5 Great E-Mail Timesavers

If you're one of Gmail's 193 million users worldwide, you probably rely on the service--and its add-ons--every day. Popular among users for its customization features, Google constantly adds to its arsenal of Labs and brings new features mainstream to simplify processes and save users time.

Here are five more useful Gmail tips, including how to access multiple accounts in one browser, schedule time zone changes and how to opt out of annoying conversation threads.

Five Can't-Miss Features that Boost Google E-Mail

How to Take Chat Off the Record; Archive Gmail E-Mails

Google's Top 10 Best (and Worst) Innovations of 2010

1. How to Grant Access to Your Gmail Account

If you own two Gmail accounts, say one for your personal correspondences and one for work, signing in and out between the accounts can get tedious. A new feature, called "e-mail delegation," has been available to Google Apps accounts for a while, but just recently become available to everyone else using Gmail.

This feature lets you grant access to someone--a personal assistant, for example--allowing them to read and respond to your e-mail on your behalf.

To do this, click on your "Settings" link in the top right corner of Gmail. On the "Accounts and Import" tab is a new section about halfway down where you can grant access to your account. Note that you can only add an e-mail address if the person is also a Gmail user.

After you click the link and add an e-mail address, Gmail will send a confirmation e-mail to the other user. Once he or she accepts, your helper can access your account, read and reply to e-mails on your behalf. Visit the same Settings page if you want to revoke this privilege.

2. How to Opt-Out of Conversation Threads

You've probably been involved in a conversation thread with 10 other people who "reply all," filling your inbox with messages. An easy way to leave this conversation is via Gmail's new feature, "Smart Mute."

With Smart Mute, continued conversations will only appear in your inbox if a new message in the conversation is addressed to you and no one else, or a new e-mail in the conversation adds you to the "To" or "Cc" line. Once you enable Smart Mute, it'll be active across all versions of Gmail--Web, mobile, etc.

To enable Smart Mute, visit the Settings link in Gmail, click the Labs tab, scroll until you see the feature, then click "Enable." Be sure to click Save at the bottom of the page. When you receive an e-mail that you'd like to mute, choose "More actions" from the Gmail toolbar and click "Mute." Visit the same place if you'd like to unmute a conversation, and receive messages from the thread once again.

3. How to Easily Schedule Events in Different Time Zones

If you travel frequently, keeping track of appointments in different time zones can be a headache. With Google Calendar's event time zones, you can specify the time zone for a given event, instead of guessing the difference in time. Events will appear on your calendar according to the current time zone you're in.

From Gmail, click the Calendar link and choose "Create event" on the left side of the page. Click the "Time zone" link, and choose the location of the event--no need to determine which time zone they're in; that field will update automatically. You can also choose separate start and end time zones for blocking out time when flying, for example.

4. How to Auto-Advance to the Next Conversation

Traditionally, when you open an e-mail in your inbox then archive or delete it, Gmail sends you back to your inbox, where all your other e-mails are visible. A feature in Gmail Labs, called "Auto-Advance" instead automatically opens the next conversation, eliminating the need to return to the home screen.

To enable Auto-Advance, visit the Labs tab under Settings. You'll have the option to go to the next conversation, go to the previous conversation, or go back to the thread list. Click Enable, then Save.

5. How to Toggle Between Two Gmail Accounts in One Browser

If you own or manage multiple Gmail accounts, traditionally you'd either have to log out of your current one in order to log into the other, or use multiple browsers to simultaneously access them. But Gmail's new "multiple account sign-in" feature ends that inconvenience.

Multiple account sign-in lets you sign in with up to two additional accounts, and toggle back and forth between them (or have a browser tab open for each of them simultaneously). Note that multiple account sign-in only works on desktop browsers right now.

To enable this feature, visit google.com/accounts and choose "Edit" next to "Multiple sign-in." You'll be required to check a few boxes denoting that you understand how to use the feature. When you're finished, visit your account page and click "Edit" next to e-mail addresses to add another account.

Gutsy Hacker Sells Access, Info

Artwork: Diego AguirreWant access to the administrator accounts to the U.S. Army or Italian government websites? Maybe you're just looking for personal information hacked from .edu websites. Either way, it can apparently all be yours for a price.

Imperva, a data security firm, discovered a hacker is selling alleged access to military, government and educational sites across the globe. Prices range from $499 for U.S. military websites to $55 for MySQL root access to the State of Michigan website.

Hacker's alleged conquests (click to enlarge screen)Imperva also reports that the hacker is selling personal information from the hacked websites at $20 for 1000 records. The hacker provides screenshots to prove access to personal information and access to the admin interface at a major university.

Imperva thinks the hacker was able to gain access through a code injection technique.

"The victims' vulnerabilities were probably obtained by SQL injection vulnerability automatic scanner and exploited in automatic manner, as the hacker published his methods in a post in some hacker forum," Rob Rachwald wrote in a post on the Imperva Data Securities Blog. (Good thing these guys are keeping an eye on the seedy underbelly of the Web.)

Former Washington Post reporter, Brian Krebs thinks the hacks are legit.

"I've seen some of the back-end evidence of his hacks, so it doesn't seem like he's making this up," he writes on his KrebsonSecurity blog.

Thanks to a few mostly-unaltered screenshots from Krebs' blog we are able to see the hacker is making more services available to those willing to pay.

The hacker will also "hack a normal website," scan a site for vulnerabilities for $2 and give you 3MB of random hacked accounts for $65. Check out the screenshot below to see his or her full portfolio of offerings.
