Springbox interactive agency develops branding for the Visual Arts Center

Opening to the public in September 2010, the new Visual Arts Center (VAC) at The University of Texas at Austin welcomes a branding experience built from the ground up by the creative group of Springbox interactive agency.

As an adaptive reuse of the space in the Art Building formerly occupied by the Blanton Museum, the VAC is part of the Department of Art and Art History and will serve as an exhibition and research space highlighting internationally-acclaimed artists, students, faculty and alumni through its multiple programs.

The VAC branding was a pro-bono project by the Springbox creative group and a great opportunity to extend their talent to a prestigious, local institution. After touring the newly-remodeled 22,000 square feet of space within the department, the creative group broke into four teams, each of which generated concepts comprising logos, taglines, collateral examples, projection graphics and more.

The teams presented a range of ideas to the department committee, which included John Yancey, chair of the Department of Art and Art History and John D. Murchison Regents Professor in Art; Jade Walker, director of the VAC; Rachel Cook, marketing and public relations specialist and Hunter Thomas, public affairs specialist.

Walker says, "It was impressive to work on this project with a group that has such creative energy. Springbox was so professional at each turn and really brought unique ideas to the table."

From the body of distinct proposals, the committee had the challenging task of selecting one concept, which was further refined and now serves as the new logo and brand message for the VAC. The selected concept was created by Tricia Bayne, Tom Hudson, Gerren Lamson and Shelly Leyden. Each contributed to a brand identity for the VAC that captures the energy of the space and the artistic exploration and collaboration of the community.

"The VAC was a great exercise for the creative team, and an example of what we do best: building something unique for creative hearts and minds," says Adrian Taylor, Springbox group creative director. "The Springbox creative group looks forward to more team projects that will extend their talents to the Austin area."

Ubuntu Vs. Windows: in a Nutshell

You may recall how Dell dug itself into an almighty hole last month, after proclaiming that Ubuntu was safer than Windows, before swiftly changing its mind and declaring itself more neutral than Switzerland.

Well, now the PC maker?s had time to think the matter through, another page has appeared on the Dell website, condensing the whole Windows vs Ubuntu debate into about 100 words.

From Dell?s perspective the choice is clear. You should choose Windows if (and I swear I?m not paraphrasing here):

• You are already using WINDOWS programs (e.g. Microsoft Office, iTunes etc) and want to continue using them


• You are familiar with WINDOWS and do not want to learn new programs for email, word processing etc


• You are new to using computers

And you should plump for Ubuntu if:

• You do not plan to use Microsoft WINDOWS


• You are interested in open source programming

So, just to get this highly complex argument straight: you should use Windows if you?ve already used Windows or have never used Windows. And you should only think about Ubuntu if you?re an open-source programmer. Got it?

By the way, I?m writing a feature on Ubuntu 10.04 vs Windows 7 for the next issue of PC Pro, on sale 21 August. I?m not sure I can match the degree of sophistication in Dell?s carefully thought-out analysis, but I?ll give it a go...

PumpkinMixer

I don?t often talk about my own projects on Lines and Colors, but sometimes they?re enough fun to be worthy of note.

PumpkinMixer is my new app for the iPhone and iPod touch. Like my other apps, DinoMixer and MonsterMixer, it was developed with my friend and colleague Leon Stankowski, who created the coding to fit with my design and illustrations, worked with me on the functionality and coordinated the sound.

Similar to the other ?Mixer? apps, PumpkinMixer is based loosely on the old Surrealist game of Exquisite Corpse, in which artists would fold over paper and draw three independent parts of a drawing, head, body and legs, without seeing the outcome until all were in place. This concept made its way into popular culture as a children?s game (my friends and I played it in elementary school), and was eventually adapted in publishing as ?mix-n-match? children?s picture books (usually spiral-bound, with stiff cardboard pages that are divided in three).

PumpkinMixer, like DinoMixer and MonsterMixer, is an electronic version of this. In the case of PumpkinMixer, you swipe side to side to swap sets of eyes, noses and mouths, with an extra horizontal band at the top to switch between three backgrounds. Swiping on the iPhone screen vertically switches between pumpkins and swaps out the colors of the animated ?candle flame? behind the face cut-outs.

In designing the interface and creating the artwork, which was done digitally in Painter and Photoshop in the same way I draw my webcomic, Argon Zark!, I faced the same challenges I outlined in my post about creating the artwork for DinoMixer.

Like many illustration projects, this one, in addition to the design and technical challenges, had a deadline. Since PumpkinMixer just made it through the App Store approval process and became available today, one day before Halloween, you might say we just made it; though we obviously had an earlier release in mind.

On the other hand, you could say we?re just really really early for next Halloween!

While experienced computer users can easily make a correct diagnosis out of observable signs and symptoms exhibited by their PCs, the rest of us barely have a clue as to whether or not something is really wrong with our computers. Although some problems may require an expert to fix, most glitches can easily be corrected without the need for a technician. So how do you really tell if your computer really requires repair? Here are tips on how to check:

• Learning to Eliminate
  Unless you are experienced at diagnosing what ails your computer, the best thing you can do is to try to determine the problem by elimination. First, find out the symptoms and then consider the most possible causes and eliminate those that are not plausible. This will help you discover the most possible explanation for the problem. From there, you can decide whether or not your computer really requires repair.
• Learning to Scan
  Many of the problems manifested by the computer are caused by malware such as viruses, spyware and adware. As long as your computer and antivirus software are updated, you can perform a regular scan to check for any infection. In most cases, common problems are solved this way, although others may require you to download patches to correct any errors and vulnerabilities.
• No Power
  If your computer won?t turn on, don?t immediately assume you?ll need professional help. Check if it?s connected to a power outlet and then check if there is power. Next, check the power button and the connections for the cables. If using a battery to run a laptop, determine if the battery has been sufficiently charged. Only when you?ve checked all possible scenarios and still failed should you consider having your computer repaired.
• Slowpoke Computer
  A slow computer may not always be a sign that it really requires repair. It may be because you?re running a lot of programs that may be too much of a burden for the amount of memory your computer has. Try to close programs you don?t need and delete stuff you have no use for. Empty your recycle bin right after. Defrag your system to re-organize your files.

If these steps still don?t fix your problem, it may either be because you need more memory or that there?s something in your system that requires a checkup from the professionals.

• Missing Drivers
  This usually comes as a surprise, when your computer shows a message indicating that a device is missing. If you are quite sure that drivers for hardware you?re using have already been installed, try to re-install them using the appropriate CDs. In minor cases, that should fix the problem. If the problem continues or if your computer exhibits even stranger symptoms, that?s a clear sign that you really need to have it repaired.
• The need to Reboot now and then
  Frequent rebooting is often the result of a system freezing or hanging up. This is when the computer screen just simply stops reacting to what you do and nothing you can do to the keyboard or the mouse seems to work. The only way to make the system work again is to press the reboot button. If this happens, then it?s a sign that you shouldn?t try to fix it yourself because your computer really requires repair.

Celui-ci fait de son mieux pour redresser le pays apr�s le passage de Frederick Chiluba. Il s'est engag� dans une entreprise de reconstruction du pays qui est confront� � d'�normes d�fis tant �conomiques que sociaux.

Estimez-vous que la nouvelle �quipe sera en mesure de remettre la Zambie sur la voie de la croissance ?

Si le pr�sident continue sur la voie d�j� trac�e, il r�ussira sans doute � faire de la Zambie un mod�le de r�ussite �conomique. Mais il aura � s'attaquer � des probl�mes internes qui rongent la soci�t�. Je pense notamment aux conflits tribaux. Il faudra imp�rativement mettre fin � ces conflits. Ce que je consid�re comme une condition sine qua non pour r�ussir le d�collage �conomique de la Zambie

La Chine s'est engag�e � jeter les bases d'un nouveau partenariat �conomique avec l'Afrique. Croyez-vous dans cette nouvelle coop�ration ?

Je crois sinc�rement et profond�ment dans la coop�ration Sud-Sud. Il n'y pas que la Chine. Ce nouveau partenariat peut se faire �galement avec l'Inde. Je pense que l'Inde et la Chine sont les deux nouvelles puissances �conomiques mondiales qui peuvent assister l'Afrique dans son d�collage �conomique. Ces deux pays offrent en plus l'exemple de bon 'leadership' et de bonne gouvernance.

Ces deux puissances peuvent prendre avantage des opportunit�s d'affaires en Afrique ?

Certainement. Je pense qu'il y a �norm�ment de possibilit�s de partenariats d'affaires dans un certain nombre de secteurs. Je pense � l'agro-industrie, � l'exploitation mini�re et au d�veloppement des produits p�troliers. Des pays comme le Soudan et le Nigeria offrent d'excellentes perspectives dans ces cr�neaux d'activit�s.

Vous avez connu le P�re de la nation, feu Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. Votre visite � Maurice vous a permis de rencontrer son fils, Navin Ramgoolam, qui est au pouvoir depuis juillet 2005. Quelle est votre appr�ciation de ces deux hommes ?

Le Dr. Navin Ramgoolam est certainement le digne successeur de son p�re que j'ai personnellement connu et qui a �t� un grand ami de l'Afrique. S'il suit les traces de son p�re, il rendra un grand service � Maurice mais aussi � l'ensemble du continent africain. Comme son papa l'a �t� d'ailleurs.

Maurice s'ouvre aux investissements �trangers pour financer la restructuration de son �conomie. Comment voyez-vous cette nouvelle strat�gie ?

C'est tr�s prometteur. Mais je constate que beaucoup de pays font actuellement face aux d�fis de la mondialisation. La strat�gie est certes audacieuse mais Maurice n'a pas de choix. Cette ouverture offrira � Maurice d'�normes possibilit�s d'investissement venant des pays d�velopp�s et ceux en voie de d�veloppement. L'Afrique peut certainement prendre avantage de cette ouverture et s'engager dans des projets d'investissement.

Quelle �valuation faites-vous de la coop�ration �conomique et commerciale entre Maurice et la Zambie ?
