"Camping with your young children does not have to be a burden of worries. You take the vacation away from home to relax and have fun. But there are some guidelines to follow in order to do so."

Recently while talking with some friends about a camping trip I took with my family, I was surprised by their reaction. They showed concern about the safety of my three-year-old. "What if she wondered off?", "What if she got hurt way up there?" These are only a few of the responses I received.

Camping with your young children does not have to be a burden of worries. You take the vacation away from home to relax and have fun. But there are some guidelines to follow in order to do so. Rather you tent it or have a camper, you first need to pack a first aid kit, common sense I know, but it needed to be said. While your packing be sure to throw in some toys -bucket and shovel, trucks, blowing bubbles, etc.-. And of coarse you mustnt forget the warm jackets for the evening chill.

Once you arrive to your destination, before you even start to unload, do a border walk with your children. By this I mean literally walk around your campsite, and point out distinctive landmarks that they are not to pass without an adult. I have a three-year-old, so I choose things I know shell understand like "do not pass this stump, without mommy or daddy." Once the border is established then unload and set up a couple different play areas that can easily be seen from your chair near the campfire. Place the blowing bubbles on the large rock on one side of the campsite, and the trucks near the stump on the other side. This will give them a variety of things to do, and keep them entertained so they are not tempted to wonder off.

After settling in and possibly getting a bite to eat, take a nice walk around with the children. Make sure they know that if they take off or let go of your hand, then the walk will be over and everyone will go back to camp. Most important though, and I cannot stress this enough. Have fun and relax, your kids will benefit from the fresh air and so will you.

Epic Gifts to Avoid this Christmas

Remember the kid from the third Jurassic Park movie who stayed alive for weeks hiding in the payload area of a wrecked tanker truck?

This prefab metal shed haute architectural marvel is almost the same thing, if the dinosaurs went away and the metal tank rotted and rusted for a few years.

Vostok Cabin by Atelier Van Lieshout (click to enlarge)It's set up as a sauna, but you can also use it for your militia meetings or a place to hide out after the apocalypse when the neighbors have gone cannibal and you need a place to lay low.

On one hand, it would be mobile (if you had a forklift and truck), indestructible and artistic (in the way you never got when looking at sculpture made out of random bits or welded junk iron) without being too chi-chi.

On the other, it's art, there's only one and if you bought it from Cite de La Science in Paris, where it's on exhibit, it would probably be a lot more expensive than buying the empty tank from a water truck or bed of a heavy truck and converting that into your sauna/garden shed/zombie apocalypse shelter.

At the other end of the ugly spectrum is this beautiful thing that looks so much like a nightmarishly high-end kid's tricycle your first response will be to roll your eyes until you're dizzy at the extravagance of other people.

Then you realize it's actually a two-wheeler designed for adults, has an electric motor so you're not pedaling most of the time and folds up into a convenient commute-and-carry vehicle...well, I don't know what you'll do.

I love bikes of all kinds for both their looks and sublimely subtle engineering and I still don't know what I think of the damn thing.

It goes 14 MPH, weighs 23 pounds, folds up in 20 seconds and has a rider weight limit of 220 pounds.

I can't imagine riding it any distance, but it's designed for short commutes, bops-around-town, and trip-to-the-store (apparently from the yacht, judging from this gallery). It is unquestionably beautiful, if you have a fetish for nicely crafted carbon and smart engineering.

The balance and steering are different enough from a regular fold-up or other electric bike to earn a reassuring pat on the head for nervous potential customers at the top of the FAQ and costs $3600.

It's been covered by gadget sites and Wired -- most of which thought it was cool looking, expensive and not as practical as a folding regular commuter bike.

Kids Eco-Friendly Clothing Is Not Just A Lifestyle Choice

Green issues in clothing manufacturing has seen an increase in eco-friendly clothing for kids - its not just a lifestyle choice it is also common sense.

PR9.NET October 20, 2009 - More families are now leading greener lives to help with environmental issues. Playing their part by recycling, taking notice of their carbon footprints and buying environmentally-friendly goods. It is a great way to get the kids involved from an early age and teaching them how to 'respect' our Planet better and conditioning their actions for years to come.

However, leading an eco-friendly lifestyle can sometimes mean compromises and families might also think about the expense involved as well. This needn't be the case, especially when it comes to children's clothing.

There are a multitude of brands, today, that offer highly fashionable children's clothing ranges that tick all the requirements for greener clothing. From organic fabrics to energy consumption used to make the clothes to packaging, each stage of the process is geared towards a more greener environment than normal everyday kids clothing manufacturers.

It is not unusual that parents prefer their children to be wearing 'greener clothes', they are not your typical, regimented colours of blues or pinks, governed by so many supermarket chains and high street stores. Instead, greener, eco-friendly kids clothes have unique vibrant prints, ooze style and are made with responsible, careful manufacturing that put the inexpensive kids clothing garments found in supermarkets and discount chain stores to shame.

Julie Reid, owner of kids online boutique store, mashNgravy (www.mashngravy.com), said, "'At Mash n gravy we try to source responsibly produced children's clothing. Most labels, if not manufactured entirely from organic cotton or a bamboo/cotton mix, at least offer an organic capsule collection, thereby affording the consumer a choice. Our European brands adhere to the strict Oko-Tex standard 100 to ensure no content of harmful substances or chemicals and many can boast the Eu eco-label flower award guaranteeing the wellbeing and sustainability of the garment from the cotton's life in the field to the clothes on the shop floor. In order to stand by these principals, water based dyes and layering techniques are employed ensuring that the designs maintain their original bright colours wash after wash."

"Sustainably produced children's clothing may appear a little more expensive but it's superior quality will ensure that sibling after sibling can benefit as well as reducing the impact on our planet and mums purse in the long run." Added Miss Reid.

Next time your out and about and are considering purchasing some new clothes for your children, consider the processes that went into making them and ask yourself, "Is buying this really going to help the Planet?"

The Sims Castaway Stories

It might not have been clear back in 2000 that The Sims would become the best-selling, multiplatform phenomenon it is today. But the series' unusual formula--which let you control the lives of little computer people as they ate, slept, found work, and formed relationships with other little computer people--launched a lengthy series of games on both the PC and consoles. The console versions of the game never quite captured the zany, unpredictable nature of the original PC versions, which had superior artificial intelligence, but The Sims 2: Castaway comes the closest to presenting a fresh and enjoyable new experience.

To be fair, Castaway has a lot of the same features as The Sims series. You create a custom "sim" character with certain vocational skills and personal needs (such as hunger, fatigue, and social interaction), but this new game takes a creative approach to the use of these features. Rather than build a small group to live the life of a nuclear family in the same house, you create a crew of castaways who end up shipwrecked on a tropical island and must make a new home for themselves a la Swiss Family Robinson. To that end, you'll guide your characters to collect driftwood and other building materials, along with various wild fruits and vegetables to eat (some poisonous, some not). You'll also catch fish with a spear, fashion clothing out of tropical leaves, and build primitive shelters and even rafts to explore the surrounding islands. You'll also fulfill your characters' need for social interaction by either finding the lost members of your crew, or making friends with the local monkeys, who can be bribed with bananas and eventually trained to gather materials or food for you.

Castaway builds on the "mostly open-ended game with some goals" design that previous games in the series followed by also heavily emphasizing collection gameplay. You spend a great deal of time picking up stuff or harvesting supplies (in some cases, to build tools to let you harvest other types of supplies). However, you certainly don't have to pick up everything unless you're an obsessive collector type who has to discover every variety of plant, collect every type of seashell, or catch every species of fish. In many cases, you'll instead be exploring new areas in search of new materials and clues to advance, such as discarded books that contain plans for new items to craft, as well as random messages in bottles that wash up on shore.

If you can tolerate the collection gameplay, which occasionally gets a bit repetitive, the game actually offers a surprisingly varied experience reminiscent of games such as Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, or the Seasons expansion pack for The Sims 2 PC. All of those games were relaxing, leisurely experiences for players of all ages, and they let you interact with a colorful, nonthreatening world to accomplish your goals when you cared to. In Castaway, you'll basically always have at least a few different easy tasks on your plate to accomplish, as well as some slightly longer-term goals for which you'll need to collect a few more resources or make a few more discoveries to complete. Your sims do suffer from their physical needs, but they're generally easy to maintain. Likewise, some of the more advanced crafting recipes require your characters to develop higher skill levels in vocational areas such as body strength and mechanical skills, but these skills develop naturally as you continue to explore, harvest, build, and interact, so they're usually not a burden to deal with.

Castaway also offers a fresh new visual look that features slimmer characters with a more-stylized look. They're not necessarily better than the typically more detailed, more colorful characters from previous games, but they're certainly new, and they still move with the kind of expressive animations you'd expect from a Sims game. The game also offers plenty of brand-new sound samples for the nonsensical "simlish" language the characters speak. Better yet, the game features an all-new musical soundtrack that, unlike previous Sims console games, does not heavily recycle music from the PC versions, but instead uses new tropical-themed songs that are suitably lighthearted and cheerful. That's why it's a shame that the PS2 version of the game suffers from load times that randomly become very long, and that occasionally cause the game to hang indefinitely so that you lose all of your progress.

By offering new graphics, new sounds, new music, and a new way to play The Sims, Castaway offers a lively way to enjoy the series and those little gibberish-speaking characters that have made such a name for themselves--as long as you have enough patience to spend a good chunk of time hunting and gathering.

Themes for Childrens Parties

Planning a children's party can be a little overwhelming... even scary. After all, throwing a great party is something your child will remember for a long lime. On the other hand, if the party bombs they will NEVER forget it.

The easiest way to ensure a successful party is to build it around one central theme.

A theme will allow you to integrate all the different elements of the party, it will point you in the right decorating direction, and it will help you plan your activities. Having a theme is essential.

How to Choose a Theme

Choosing a theme for your child's party depends on three key factors:

- The age of the child

- The child's interests

- The time of year or reason for the party

The Age of the Child - The age of the children who will attend the party will have a lot to do with the party theme you choose. Blue's Clues might be great for a pack of three year olds, but a seven year old birthday boy would be mortified! By the same token, Harry Potter might serve you well for a group of pre-teens, but a group of kindergarteners just wouldn't get it.

The point... be sure your theme is appropriate for you child's age.

The Child's Interests - What is your child interested in? Some kids love particular sports like gymnastics or soccer, while others have a keen interest in super heros or science. Just about anything that a child is really interested in can be transformed into a great theme for a party.

Book characters, television shows, special hobbies, sports, animals, fantasy stories, heros, historical genres, cartoon characters, etc. all provide excellent theme possibilities.

The Time of Year or Reason For The Party - A halloween party has a built in theme, so a birthday around that time of year might have a Halloween or costume theme. Summer parties are often "pool parties" or outdoor themed parties. Obviously, you wouldn't have an outdoor pool party for Christmas if you live in Canada... it just wouldn't make sense.

The "Best" Way to Choose A Theme...

Talk to your child and get them involved in the planning!

Most kids have a pretty good idea of what kind of party they want. If you fail to talk it over with your child, you might both be disappointed.

Children often have unrealistic expectations. A lot of kids have a whole scenario layed out in their head -- they've imagined every little part of the party and they expect you to deliver. Talking it out can help you both find a realistic common ground.

Sometimes it also helps to provide a younger child with two or three theme choices and let the child choose his/her own party theme.

Once you've decided on a theme, it becomes fairly easy to plan the party. The invitations, decorations, food, favors, and activities will all be based on your theme. Choose a theme that truly fits your child's personality and you'll be sure to create an awesome party experience for both of you.

Have a Holiday Without Evercookies with Free Anonymizer Nevercookie

Worried about your Internet privacy? You should be, especially because of the latest Internet danger, so-called "evercookies." Evercookies store cookie data in multiple ways on a browser so that cookie tracking information can't be easily deleted. (Cookies, as you probably know, are bits of data on your hard disk that can be used to trace your Internet habits, although they can also be used to remember your login information at Web sites.) The usual tools for getting rid of cookies won't work on evercookies. But there's a tool that claims to kill them, while still letting you keep useful cookies on your hard disk: free Firefox add-in Anonymizer Nevercookie. Run Nevercookie, and its creators say you'll be safe from the intrusive evercookie technology.

Anonymizer Nevercookie screenshotAnonymizer Nevercookie can be confusing to set up, but it protects you against "evercookies."It can be confusing to use Anonymizer Nevercookie at first. Install it, and then launch Firefox. When you launch Firefox after you've installed Nevercookie, a Choose User Profile screen may appear if you haven't used Firefox profiles previously. That screen appears because when you use Nevercookie with Private Browsing, a temporary profile is set up for each browsing session as a way to protect your privacy. If you don't want to see the screen appear every time, select the "default" profile, check the box next to "Don't ask at startup," and then click Start Firefox.

When Firefox starts, you won't yet be protected. You need to use Firefox's Private Browsing mode by choosing Tools -->Private Browsing, or else pressing Ctrl-Shift-P. A Private Browsing screen appears, and then a box appears telling you about using Nevercookie. Click OK. A second Private Browsing screen appears, with the toolbar colored blue. When you use that private browsing screen, Nevercookie will be protecting you. (It won't protect you if you use the non-blue, original Private Browsing screen.) Note that in this blue Private Browsing screen, the Nevercookie add-on won't show up if you select Tools-->Add-Ons. But it's there, keeping you safe.

Anonymizer Nevercookie is more a proof-of-concept than anything else at this point, because it doesn't integrate into your normal browsing sessions, and works only in Private Browsing. Still, if you're worried about evercookies, and are willing to browse the Web in Private Browsing mode, you'll find it useful.
