Arabic-language press: Egypt uncovers Israeli spy network that eavesdropped on govt officials

'Authorities arrest members of alleged Egypt-based Israeli spy ring'

Egyptian security forces have arrested several people suspected of belonging to an Israeli spy network operating in Egypt. The alleged network reportedly consists of two fugitive Israeli officers and four Egyptian nationals.

The State Security apparatus is currently conducting a highly secretive investigation of the suspects.

Investigations have so far revealed that network members had succeeded in establishing two communications offices, one in Cairo and one in the UK, through which they recorded telephone calls made by prominent Egyptian government officials. The calls were then allegedly transferred to a communications office in Israel.

Investigations have further revealed that one of the Israeli officers had managed to recruit a female Egyptian public relations director working at a tourism company to supply him with information, in return for money, about places frequented by certain groups of tourists -- including those from China and Japan -- near the border region of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

After being provided with the information, the Israeli officer was then able to kidnap a number of tourists who were allegedly taken to Israel. After several days, kidnapped tourists were then reportedly returned to the place from which they had been abducted. The operation's apparent objective was to destabilize security in the Sinai Peninsula.

Confessions by the defendants have revealed that the two officers had recruited a former female basketball player and her friend to rent a communications office in Cairo, which was run by a third person who has also been arrested. This office was reportedly linked to a communications office in the UK.

The defendants were thus able to monitor and record telephone calls made from certain landlines in Egypt -- as specified by the two officers -- which were then transferred to the UK office before being re-transmitted to a communications office in Israel.

Egyptian security forces have arrested and detained the Egyptian suspects pending investigation, while public prosecutors have charged them with conducting espionage for a foreign country, recording telephone calls without permission, and forming a "terrorist cell" aimed at disrupting public order.

Interpol, meanwhile, has been asked to issue arrest warrants for the Israeli suspects.

Al-Masry Al-Youm has learned that the case file contains more than 15 telephone calls involving high-ranking government officials that were successfully recorded by the suspected spies.

Ohio State's Jared Sullinger earns Big Ten Player of the Week honors for the fourth time and Freshman of the Week honors for the ninth time this season. The 6-9 center averaged a double-double last week in wins against Iowa and No. 23/22 Illinois. He scored 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in Ohio State's win over the Illini, finishing with averages of 20.0 points and 12.5 rebounds. The Columbus, Ohio, native also had three blocks against Illinois and played all 40 minutes in the game. Sullinger made 13 free throws against the Illini, marking the second-highest single-game total by an Ohio State freshman. His double-double in the game marked his ninth this season, which is the second-highest total in the Big Ten this year.

New Panasonic Lumix Cameras: 3D, GPS, and Ghost-Free Photos

Four new point-and-shoot Lumix cameras announced today by Panasonic offer a mix of new features to augment the company's pocket megazoom, rugged camera, and ultracompact camera lines. Joining the new Panasonic cameras announced just a few weeks ago at CES, the latest Lumix additions offer such features as 3D still-image shooting; enhanced in-camera GPS; a combination of touchscreen- and button-operated controls; and new, specially coated lens glass that the company says helps capture crisp, sharp images.

The new cameras consist of the pocket megazoom Lumix DMC-ZS10 and Lumix ZS8 (which replace last year's Lumix ZS7 and Lumix ZS5, respectively), the ultracompact Lumix DMC-FX78 (which replaces the Lumix FX75), and the rugged Lumix DMC-TS3.

Lumix ZS10 and ZS8: 16X Optical Zoom and Ghost-Free Glass

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS10

The Lumix ZS10 and Lumix ZS8 are the new high-end pocket megazooms from Panasonic, extending the zoom range of last year's 12X ZS models to an even more ample 16X (24mm to 384mm, F3.3 to F5.9).

Both of the new high-zoom compact cameras support full manual controls, revamped optical image stabilization that offers greater motion correction at the wide-angle end, and a new "nano surface coating" on the cameras' lenses that the company says reduces ghosting and improves image sharpness. Panasonic also says that the cameras simplify uploading to YouTube and Facebook via redesigned software.

Beyond that, the Lumix ZS10 has a few major differences when compared to the similar but less tricked-out ZS8. The ZS10 carries a 14-megapixel CMOS sensor with a fast 10fps burst mode at full resolution, compared to the ZS8's 14-megapixel CCD sensor's 1.9fps continuous capture at full resolution. Also, the ZS10 offers in-camera GPS tagging and a map interface with points-of-interest and landmark information for 1 million international locations; the ZS8 lacks those GPS and mapping capabilities.

Another ZS10-only feature is a 3D-shooting mode, which you operate by panning the camera from side to side to capture multiple shots, and two of these are combined to create an .MPO-format image; it sounds a lot like a truncated version of Sony's 3D Sweep Panorama mode. The ZS10 boasts touch-based focus, shutter, and motion-tracking controls on its 3-inch LCD screen, in addition to physical button-based controls; and it shoots AVCHD video at 1080i/60fps. The ZS8 doesn't have a touchscreen or a 3D mode, and its video caps out at 720p/30fps in MOV format.

Both cameras are due in March, but Panasonic has not announced pricing details for either model.

Lumix TS3: Rugged Camera With 3D, GPS, and 1080p Video

Panasonic's rugged camera line also receives a 3D-and-GPS-fueled update (and a fairly slick redesign) with the Lumix DMC-TS3. The new TS3 is a 12-megapixel CCD camera with a 4.6X optical zoom lens (28mm to 128mm, F3.3 to F18). The TS3 is rated as waterproof when submerged to depths of 40 feet (or less) underwater, shockproof when dropped from heights of up to 6.6 feet, freezeproof, and dustproof.

It provides the same in-camera GPS functionality as the Lumix ZS10, as well as a barometer, a compass, and an altimeter to spice up underwater, hiking, and snowboarding shoots. The TS3 also offers the new 3D mode to capture .MPO images with a quick pan of the camera, as well as full HD video recording at 1080i/60fps.

Panasonic's new flagship rugged camera supports a 3.7fps burst mode at full resolution and carries the new revamped uploading software for YouTube and Facebook. Pricing has yet to be announced; the TS3 will be available in March.

Lumix FX78: Ultraslim Touchscreen Cam With Face-Editing Features

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX78The 12-megapixel CCD-based FX78 is designed to be operated almost entirely via its 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen. It packs an ultra-wide-angle 5X optical zoom lens (24mm to 120mm, F2.5 to F18) and is just 0.81 inch deep.

The FX78 shoots full HD video as well (1080p at 30fps). The distiguishing feature here is the camera's range of touch-based controls.

In addition to the standard touch-focus, touch-shutter, and touch-motion-tracking controls, the FX78 includes touchscreen "cosmetic functions," which let you apply digital makeup to a subject's face after capturing an image. The camera also shares the same 3D-shooting mode and the upload-friendly software for YouTube and Facebook that the other new Lumix cameras have.

Also due in March, the FX78 does not yet have a finalized price.

Dan Rather: Help Wanted! -- (But Not Here)

So we've had the big visit with Chinese leaders and the triumphant tour in Schenectady with the newly-appointed job creation czar -- General Electric's CEO Jeffrey R. Immelt. But with all the talk of trade deals and jobs last week, what's gotten scant notice is the fact that increasing U.S. trade with emerging economic powers is not only creating, but also costing American jobs.

An investigation of recent trade dealings with India by Dan Rather Reports found little evidence to support the prevailing wisdom among Washington policy makers that helping U.S. business giants drum up new customers necessarily translates into new jobs for American workers at home -- at least in the short-to-medium term.

Like China, India has been dominating the attention of America's multinationals, and many are building operations in South Asia that are nothing short of stunning. And with companies refocusing on India, good jobs once held by Americans are disappearing by the tens of thousands.

Industry estimates indicate that the U.S. lost more than 250,000 information technology jobs over the past two years. Meanwhile, the hi-tech outsourcing industry in India -- where the typical starting salary for an IT worker is less than $9,000 a year -- hired more than 850,000 people.

Bangalore, which is often called the Silicon Valley of India, is the center of the country's exploding hi-tech outsourcing industry. Driving around the sprawling city today, you see all sorts of familiar logos -- from General Motors to General Electric, Microsoft to Hewlett Packard.

Over the past three years, American companies operating in India have increased production seven-fold, according to a survey by India's IT Outsourcing industry association. The bulk of those operations, the survey found, involve research and development. We're not just creating overseas jobs at an astounding rate, we're off-shoring the innovation and the know-how that we need to lay the groundwork for the future of the American economy.

During our investigative team's work in India during November, President Obama arrived in Mumbai for his first state visit to the country. Just three days after the Democrats' historic midterm defeat, the president gave the keynote address at a summit co-hosted by a branch of the U.S Chamber of Commerce and allayed concerns among the business community that the U.S. would succumb to a protectionist panic.

WATCH:

"Trade between our countries is not just a one-way street of American jobs and companies moving to India," the president said. "It is a dynamic, two-way relationship that is creating jobs, growth, and higher living standards in both our countries."

To prove the point, he announced with great fanfare that the White House had helped broker a host of trade deals, billions of dollars of contracts for American companies like General Electric and Boeing. President Obama said the deals with India would "lead to more than 50,000 jobs in the United States."

But when we asked Francisco J. Sanchez --the Undersecretary of Commerce for International Trade -- whether the trade agreements included any provisions requiring the American companies do the work in U.S, he said that was not how trade deals worked.

"No, there were no government requirement that they be in place," Sanchez said:

What I can tell you, though, is that those companies that sign those contracts have very substantial investments in factories, in people in the United States. And so in order to make good on the contracts that they've signed they just can't up and leave and fulfill those. So I'm pretty confident that the contracts that were signed will create American jobs.

That confidence, it seems, remains intact despite the fact that over the past decade, the U.S. has suffered from two jobless recoveries. And over that time, annual exports from India's hi-tech outsourcing business has exploded from nearly $6 billion to over $50 billion. And of course, that doesn't even count all the work American companies have off-shored to other low-wage countries -- including the big kahuna, China.

On Friday morning, when President Obama toured the GE facility in Schenectady -- where some of turbines for India are manufactured -- according to the Albany Times-Union, Immelt noted that the Capital Region of New York was the birthplace of GE and home to 7,000 employees. "I know that this team can compete with anyone," he said.

What wasn't mentioned is that 7,000 is a small percentage of the 40,000 workers that GE once had in the region. Or the fact that GE has 5,000 researchers and scientists in Bangalore and plans for new Indian manufacturing facilities in India that are slated to begin operations soon.

In 2000, GE's annual report indicated that the company had 131,000 employees in the U.S. and 92,000 across the rest of the world. By 2009, the company's U.S. headcount had increased only modestly to 134,000 while GE's foreign payroll had climbed 154,000 -- up by more than 45 percent.

When it comes to expanding trade and creating jobs, the argument from Washington, Wall Street and most economists remains, "have patience, wait and see, and you'll see that's it's all truly 'win-win.'" Maybe, but in the meantime working people across America have good reason to be skeptical.
